Poo/Pf Tek Jars/Colonization
    #4655797 - 09/13/05 03:56 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

I prepared 1/2 pint jars with a mix of 5 cups horse/cow shit and 3 cups verm. I moistened until I could squeeze a little bit and just a little water dripped out. I then put this mix into the jars with about 1/2" to 3/4" of dry verm on top. I pressure cooked 12 of these jars at 15 ps1 for one hour on 9/5. I inoculated them in a glove box on 9/6 with an Ecuador syringe that I got from Sporeworks. After each jar I flame sterilized the needle and rubbed it with alcohol. The jars have been sitting in a dark closet at about 80 degrees since 9/6. All but one are showing signs of colonization, some faster than others. I've read that it can take anywhere from 14-35 days for PF jars to fully colonize so I know I've got some waiting to do.

My question is what can be done to get 100% colonization more toward the 14 days instead of the 35 days? Should I use some perlite next time to keep things "fluffy"? I noticed that my "fluffy" jars are colonizing much faster than the jars that seem to be packed a little tighter. Also, what about flipping the jars?

You could use grains. They colonize a lot faster than pf. On a side note flip your jars once growth stalls

Yeah, I have heard about grains but I'll need to read up on the procedures more. Thanks.

Instead of using plain H20 for the mixture of the substrate, use a pot of coffee that's at half strength or a little less. They'll fly. Also, just barely tamp down the substrate rather than packing it tight. The colonization will tighten up the substrate for you..

Can I use grains via the pf-tek method? IOW, can I put the grain in the jars with the dry verm layer on top and keep the lids tight with the 4 inoculation holes uncovered? I've read about a polyfill filter but I'm not sure what this is. Is it just a wad of polyfill on top instead of verm?

Thanks for the coffee idea, but what does half strength mean? Does it mean to use half the coffee grounds that I normally would?

Yes, or just dilute the coffee after you make it with an equal amount of water.

This may sound like a stupid question but do you pressure cook the jars with the poly fil filter in the lid or do you put it in after the jars have cooled? Common sense tells me that the poly fil should be in there while PCing but I don't want to risk potential injury either.

Yes, and they're much cheaper than using rice. A bag of rice will run you 2 bucks for a pound or 2, while a bag of wbs will run you 10-12 bucks for 50 pounds. Simply grind the wbs as you would the rice and use as PF states.......

Any info about the polyfil filter? It makes sense for contam resistant purposes to install the filter before pressure cooking but I'd like to know what you think.

Just drill a 1/2-5/8 of an inch hole in the center of the lid. Then simply ball up a wad of polyfil tight and run it throught the hole.

Cool, thats what I did. What I'm wondering though is whether or not pressure cooking the jars with the wad of polyfil in each lid is a hazard. Will the stuff catch on fire? I'd rather not have pressure cooker shrapnel in my skin and eyes, lol. I know that professional grade masking tape won't catch on fire but I'm not sure about this stuff.

Fire requires fuel, oxygen and an ignition source. The steam generated and released from the pressure cooker should purge the air out of it (and with the air, oxygen). If you do not have a direct flame against the polyfil, you will not have an ignition source. If you follow the instructions for your PC there should be no danger of the polyfil catching fire. I have used polyfil in a PC and have never had a problem with combustion.
