Oregon Roll Call!!!!!
    #4653867 - 09/13/05 02:53 AM (18 years, 6 months ago)

It's that time again. It's started to rain and get colder in the evening. Still warm in the day but we've got a month at this point before the real fun starts. Time to start posting the beauty that is this terrarium of rotting vegetaion we call home.

There isn't any good weed, beer, or mushrooms in Oregon. Whoever told you this is a liar and a miscreant. We only pick inky caps and gallerinas.

Been getting colder in the evening and daytime. Couple of more weeks and it should be nothing but rain and cold days. Tick...tick...tick....

Here!

I spent a whole season looking for cyans for hours a day, everywhere I went in Portland and found 0. Then I hitched up to azureland and scored twice! I want to find something close to home, damn it! I found a couple libs last year, but that's it.

I've heard of 2 people finding small patches in Portland and 1 person finding a patch in St. Helens. Is that really all we got around here?

I haven't thought much about the temperature stuff since last season. Was it around 55 (as a high) and higher than 32 (as a low) degrees, with rain, that they (cyans, azures, libs) start popping? I'm sure it'll all start coming back to me soon. I look forward to seeing all those pictures of everyone's finds!

Umm, I am from Salem and I hauled in a lot last year. And by alot, I mean alot alot. Maybe a large grocerie paper bag and a half full, dried. It's all in where you look man.

And trust me, some of the biggest scores I have seen on this site were in Portland, believe it or not.

VC77! YOU! You were the man that had all the badass pictures from last season.

Seriously man, I can't even tell you how much ground I covered, I must just be looking in the only wrong places. The only stuff I've heard of was on the east side, is this the case with you? I also heard of a place (I'll lave unnamed) on the west with a large amount of rhododendrons and roses being good, but all season I kept going back and didn't see pinners, disturbed ground or anything.

Alder chips were what I was looking for (but not ONLY what I was looking for) everywhere, and I couldn't find much of those either. If I did they would in be well used playgrounds or just small piles.

Oh, I just reread what you said and now I see that you have seen big scores here, not been part of them. Okay, sorry my bad.

This season, I will pay for your gas money if you come up here and can find some with me. No joke. I am almost convinced that we have such small amounts of cyans that it's not worth going out of my way for them unless it's no hassle. I'll believe it when I see 'em though!

Wooo I can feel the season closing in! Wish there was an area around Mt. Hood, would make my travel so much easier, but oh well.

Rabbit, start out looking around college campuses. Community colleges, anything. Look under leaves, and rhodes.

Good call on that. The most mushrooms I've ever seen in a square mile were around the community college I was at last season. No luck with cyans, but they've got to be somewhere. Do you think you could list some types of ground you've found cyans growing in? Like alder chips, cedar mulch, wherever you've had luck. I've heard alder chips that have gone through a couple rain seasons, a few in cedar mulch, beech wood chips, rotting alder branches, lawns, beach grass and some other places, but I'm not sure how great some habitats would be. Should I even bother looking if the place is direct sunlight? Damn, sorry for the question bombardment again, have a goodun'!

Where's the rest of the Willamette valley at? I've been a lurker for over a year now and just thought I'd start contributing to this wonderful meme pool.

I was born and raised here in Oregon... just outside of Salem, vc77. A small rural town of 660. I began actively hunting 2 years ago, but last season was my first successful one. MJ says there are copious amounts of p. subbalteatus in haystacks in Jan.-Feb., but I've never been "sure" I've found Cyans in Corvallis parks and have friends who know patches in eugene. Same friend and I hauled between 2-3 dry lbs. of azzies, but it seems the Hammond/Astoria area is getting sketchy.

Gotta run, responsibility calls...

the few, the proud, the Oregonians

oh hell yes.... I urge all who consider picking in this area to use extreme caution. They are now bringing in extra rangers in the fall to the area to look for kids like us. My friend was stopped and arrested and wasn't even picking yet. They were going to but they hadn't started. They will harass anyone, so please be smart!

Astoria, while rich with fruits, is getting to the point where I worry about going there anymore, I just think its too dangerous this year, I think I will just hang out around my hometown

Your friend got arrested before he was even picking? What was he arrested for? That's terrifying.
