do you have the dry verm layer on the top? that should be the last 1/2" of the jar.
the myc won't grow over like the rest of the cake but it will colonize it some.

^- i second that. If you used the standard PF Tek then you should have a dry layer of vermiculite on the "top" of your jars. This layer is used as a make-shift filter to insure that your babies wont get contaminated during incubation.

shiny particles at the top of jar, did you order premade jars or somthing? If you feel like the top isnt colonizing flip jars over on the lids this will force moisture to top of jar as well as a gas exchange keep it that way for a few days.
If it is vermiculite it isnt going to colonize and it isnt supposed to.

don't take offense at purchasing jars online. its ok that you did. if it is indeed a verm layer and the jars are completely colonized then yes the dry verm layer should be discarded.
after they are completely colonized on the outside then wait a few more days to make sure the inside is completely done.
are you fruiting as cakes?

patience, that is a key to this hobby. well if the outsides are completely colonized you will be ok to birth them now as cakes. if you plan on crumbling and casing then you should give them a couple extra days to make sure the inside is done so that when you do crumble them you don't open them up to contams.
cakes or casings?
dunk and roll if you are fruiting as cakes, you won't be sorry you did.

Even if you birth them early they will continue to grow until the mycellium network is at full potential. Then it'll knot and soon you'll have shrooms. That process can take a while- I 've heard up to 2 weeks. My first cake pinned in 6 days. I had no idea what to look for. It seemed like I was taking care of them forever and not getting anything. I know how ya feel. Patience is key. Good luck.
