Geophysics is kicking my ass...
    #4654134 - 09/13/05 08:51 AM (18 years, 7 months ago)

I hate physics.  I'm a geosciences major though, so I need a couple of geophysics courses to graduate.  So here I sit, at 9 in the morning trying to figure out how you calculate angles of refraction.

Someone use Snell's Law to tell me the following: if the velocity in the firs tlayer is 1.8 km/s, and the velocity in the second layer is 2.7 km/s, and the angle of incidence is 25 degrees, what the fuck is the angle of refraction?

:eek:

How'd you get that? I got to sin(x) = .633927 and I realized I fucked something up.

You forgot to subtract the boolean logic, fool.

I got 16.4 degrees

1.8 sin(25)=2.7 sin(x)
sin(x)=(1.8 sin(25))/2.7
arcsin(.2817)=16.4

I'd tell you if you were right, but I just got done listening to my prof tell me the answers for over an hour, and I still dont know WTF he's talking about....

I'm not stupid by any means. I've done plenty of field applications and understand geology well, but this shit is just like math, in one ear and out the other...

That sounds about right. You just use the appropriate numbers in the equation and solve for x.

Right?

ohh, yeah I used the velocity instead of the index of refraction.
n1=3.0*10^8/1800
n2=3.0*10^8/2700
so:
n1*sin(25)=n2*sin(x)
divide both sides by 3.0*10^8
then you get
sin(25)/1800=sin(x)/2700
so 2700*sin(25)/1800=sin(x)
x=39.3

you had it right, you just had to take the arcsin of .633927

looking back, my first answer is obviously wrong because the angle of refraction is less than the angle of incidence. When the velocity in the first medium is less than that of the second medium, then the light will always bend away from the normal, so the angle of refraction has to be greater than the angle of incidence.

Damn, I guess I should have more faith in my mathematical ability. I wasn't sure how to get rid of that sin(x) but I see you just take sin^-1(x) to get it.

Fucking nifty! :yesnod:
