Howecome my casing layer never colonizes?

I've been using horse dung and perlite and vermiculite substrate, about 1" thick, cased with between 1/4" and just a speckling of 50/50+ without the lime (I'm growing pan cyans.) I reincubate for up to 3 days after casing, but the 50/50+ never colonizes. The way I prep the casing soil is to mix it in a big bowl and then squeeze it out a handfull at a time and load it into an autoclave bag, so it doesn't seem too moist. What is my problem?

um your casing layer IS NOT supposed to colonize. The definition of casing is: A non-nutritious layer that provides extra moisture to the substrate.

The mycelium grows through it, but it get NO nutritional value from it. You don't want it to have nutrients in it because then the casing is more prone to contams. If you have staments book, and you look at his pics, he has no myc going through it. Its preferable that it doesn't grow through it, but if it does, its not a big deal. If it colonizes the casing, you run the risk of getting overlay.

yes. it gets colonised. just because there is no nutrition in the casing doesnt mean in wont get colonised LOL. mycelium is a network not seperate units... (it takes the nutrition from the substrate)

For cyan's you really dont even need a casing layer. But if your growing cube's then you want to make sure you have a layer, and balance the ph to 6.8-7.2. Its very key to balance the ph. staments says that you should put low troughs throuh your casing layer, so when you see the myc in the low spots, you know its time to fruit. Of course the myc will grow through it. There are mushrooms that will spred myc over 20 feet across cement to find water. Equilibrium..Yeah thanks for clearing up that myc is a network.....Who would have thunk it.

A casing layer does get colonized. Not 100% colonized, but no one ever mentioned that. This is a properly colonized pan casing layer though:
Not a great picture, and pins are forming, but you can see, mycelium growth is not very thick, especially with pan cyans. There should be areas popping up however. If not..
"What is my problem?"
>"50/50+ without the lime"
Sounds like thats your problem right there. How quickly does the dung colonize after you spawn to it? Is it healthy and quick? If so, then its probably the casing mix. Hopefully your using chunky verm..casing mix neds to be light and fluffy..add perlite too if its not chunky verm. I'd get some oyster shells too, your pH could be killing the whole thing. Try fruiting some if they wont colonize in the incubtor, just to see what happens.

see, scat knows what hes talking about, its not supposed to fully grow through it.

Well thats true but your first statment:
"um your casing layer IS NOT supposed to colonize."
Isnt really correct. It is supposed to colonize, to a certain degree. Thats why it is incubated. If the person isnt getting any colonization into the casing layer then there is an issue. Thats all everyone else was saying.
Pans creeping up through the casing layer:

Hey scatmanrav, thanks. Yes, the dung colonizes lightning quick - 8x8 baking pans in a week, But then the casing doesn't look like yours, and mushies don't grow very plentiful. I'm using crushed oyster shell, but no lime. Should I go get some? And the casing colonizes a little, I should say, but is very spotty, like a place or two on one casing, and so wispy you can barely see it.
