poor mans terr wont humidify
    #4652468 - 09/12/05 09:21 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

i have a good amount of perlite in the bottom.

its the chunky stuff, not the fine stuff.

i put it in a colandar and drained it out, and washed it

i added about a 1/2 inch of water in the bottom with a couple capfulls of h2o2, and i've had it sealed for a day, and it doesnt want to form droplets on the side of the bottle.

what am i doing wrong?

poor mans pod is hard to get working with perlite (im trying the same thing.) i did my perlite, but i didnt add anymore water in the bottom, because once the perlite is completely soaked, it doesnt really work that well. but ive been keeping up pretty good humidity so far.. do you have any pics of your fruiting chamber ? or could you take some.

i dont have an air pump.

yeah, i plan on "exitedly" checking them aswell, so they should get enough fanning.

so should i just let the cake sit in there, and if i dont get any results in about a week to start taking action?

ie: rubbermaid terr. or whatever.

Why not just make a better fruiting chamber in the first place?
They're relatively cheap.

uh. what the hell guys.. the point of the poor mans pod was for lazy asses. ie. magash. hahaha. but anyways. if your going to be checking it every friggen day, you dont need a damn air pump. but, i dont check mine at all and leave the airpump running.

Perlite turns to mush eventually and it clogs your air stones, keep that in mind.

peavyxs, thats what i do, just let the airpump run, as long as its going through water, youll be alright.

These were both pics of my PMP with perlite and an air pump. If there is no air pump, it isn't truly a PMP. It would just be a terrarium. Fill the water up to the point where it's about 1/2" to 3/4" from the top of the perlite. If you have too little water in there, the perlite may not be wicking it up into the air. Make sure your lid fits snug or else humidity will escape. You don't need an air pump if you can manually fan it.

If you want an easy way to grow, I've found that double tubs are the way to go lately:

Yeah, here it is from the outside when I first made it:

You can see the tubes through the plastic coming in from the right side, but this pic doesn't show the air pump and I can't find one that does. I was using lava rock at first, THAT SUCKED! Really heavy and messy!

Below is another pic from the inside. You can see the tubes coming from the air pump on the right side. I had 2 bubblewands running longways down the middle below the perlite. It worked great!

so im kinda limited.

mr. impatient:

I read that you have perlite in your container, and about 1/2in of water (w/ some h2o2). So, how thick is your perlite layer? I usually do about 2 inches through the entire container, then throw in about an inch of water. But there is one thing that you seemed to pass up when creating your PMP... the air pump. Go down to Petsmart (or whatever your local pet store is) and pick up a nice air pump for $20 (you can go cheaper, but they're the wimpy kind)... run the tub under the perlite layer (into the water). I honestly did this in the middle of the perlite and it bubbled up. If you can afford the $2.00 airstone, pick one of those up and run it. Granted, it will need to be cleaned after every grow... it's a cheap alternative to clay rocks.

And, while you're out pick up a humidity gauge... they're in the reptile section and usually cost no more than $5.

Oh, and as for the condensation you're looking for on the walls... condensation usually only occurs with high humidity AND HIGH TEMP. So, make sure it's heated properly.

g'luck.

Why would you heat a FRUITING chamber? You want it to fruit, don't you? Unless you have a really cold environment, there's no need to heat. I get condensation without heating. Any moisture in a sealed container will cause condensation.
