how do I stop a computer fan from being a COMPUTER fan?
    #4652058 - 09/12/05 10:02 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Hello everybody,

I wanted to know if there is a way I can safely attach a cord to this guy so it can work by using the power from an outlet.

Should is solder?

That's almost certainly 12v. You can run it outside your computer the same way you run it in inside your computer: with a computer power supply. That's probably not the lightest or most convenient way to do it, but I guess it depends what you want to use it for.

If you decide to try just splicing a cord to it and plugging it into the wall, keep all flammable objects away.

don't connect the 12V fan directly into the wall outlet...fans are usually DC and wall outlets run off AC...it won't work

12VDC fans can be connected with whats called a "wall wart"....

wire the red on the fan to the positive on the wall wart, and run the black to the negative....don't get the polarity wrong on the fan or it won't work anymore :p

and when buying the wall wart just do the math to get the appropriate amp rating for it....watts = volts x amps....get the wattage of the fan and divide by 12....

happy wiring
