Cactus Flowers - Used 'em?
    #4648284 - 09/11/05 10:27 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

Has anyone gotten along well with the preparation of San Pedro flowers or Peyote flowers? (not the cacti but the flowers themselves)?

I've heard rumors of it done, but not from anyone credible. When my pedro flowered last season I had a look at them and thought about it. There is actually quite a lot of green flesh on the flower bud itself. Given that mescaline and other alkaloids are thought to be a defense mechanism, and the flower is a part of the plant that is important to defend, then it is likely that there is some mescaline in the flower pod. As for the petals themselves I would doubt it. And the question is does the green material on the flower pod have higher or lower levels of alkaloids than the normal skin. Considering that mescaline generally takes a while to build up in the plant matter I would think they don't have too much.

If anyone wants to try it out the people I've talked to who claim to have done it say that they boil 3-5 flower pods and drink that. I didn't try it myself cause the flowers didn't seem too appetising once they'd shrivelled and fallen off. Looked damn nice at the time though. A memory:

My guess would be to use fresh flowers only, not dried ones - and instead of attempting to make a full-on psychedlic drink, to soak the whole fresh flowers in spring water in a sealed glass container (while in hot sunlight) for roughly six hours. This would create a flower essence of the mescaline cactus and may be viable as a subtle medicine for the human body and mind.

I would say if you want to know for sure gather up a lot of flowers, or start drying and saving them and eventually do an extraction. if you get alkaloids they may be mescaline, you could then bioassay them if you're brave.

a US vendor called Sacred Succulents sells various Trichocereus fruit skins and flowers. I believe the petals can be eaten in salads or rehydrated for their 'emollient properties'
