Palestinians swim and loot on Gaza's first day of freedom
    #4649923 - 09/12/05 01:32 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

NEVE DEKALIM, Gaza Strip (AFP) - Palestinans celebrated the first day of the "liberation" of Gaza, scavenging through abandoned settlements for booty and taking joyous dips in the once off-limit Mediterranean sea.

If idyllic beach scenes paid testament to the Palestinian people's desire for normalcy, the grim scenes of men looting the settlement rubble revealed the dark side of the Gaza Strip as Israel ended its 38-year occupation.

The day also had a tragic twist for five people who flocked to the seaside, drowning in the waters that were for so long forbidden to them.

The minute Israeli troops started to exit the Gaza Strip, crowds ripped into the sprawling Gush Katif settlement bloc, home to 15 of the coastal territory's 21 settlements.

Their mood was anarchic and wild as they attacked the homes of their former neighbours with zeal.

In Neve Dekalim, militants pushed aside nominal Palestinian security control and ransacked still-standing industrial warehouses.

Religious extremists Hamas and Islamic Jihad raised their flags on the community's temple and smashed windows. In another show of force, black-hooded Islamic Jihad militants toting rockets and Kalashnikovs threatened to burn the religious sanctuary to the ground Monday.

But the violence went well beyond the scope of religious extremism and militancy. The stampede into Jewish settlements touched off large-scale looting by people from all walks of life, who were reeling from poverty after five years of intifada.

Many spoke of their first visit to the settlements as a chance to do one-stop shopping before the Palestinian security forces started to crack down on their escapades.

While housewives and unemployed men lugged off rubber, copper wire and sheet metal, stacked in trucks, vans, strapped on bicycles, ladders, or even donkey carts. Some men almost came to blows over who would cart away a bashed up water heater.

One man, dripping sweat, worked feverishly with an axe, ripping out metal girders from an empty warehouse. He was part of a team of three men, furiously pounding away at the building's foundation with sledgehammers and axes, oblivious to the fact the ceiling above them could collapse.

He hoped to sell the metal for 100 shekels (22 dollars) in Khan Yunis.

"It's hard when your kid asks for a shekel and you have nothing to give him. It's very hard," said 33-year-old Nasser Sifi.

"I need this money so I can feed my family."

Even a 10-year-old boy, no more than four-feet-tall, was banging a tiny hammer at a door that was twice his size, hoping to surprise his parents with a replacement for the broken door at home since they couldn't afford one on their own.

But while some flocked to Gush Katif to loot or parade as masked gunmen, an equal number savoured their chance on Gaza's day of "liberation" to return to the Gush Katif's beautiful beaches, sealed off by the Israeli army during the intifada.

After being boxed in by border shutdowns, road blocks, and years of bloody fighting, people from war-scarred Khan Yunis and Rafah wanted to indulge in summer's lighter pleasures as people do in calmer corners of the world.

The roads down to the coast became a parade of thousands of Palestinians heading for a dip. Some men swam in shorts, others, observing conservative customs, got wet in their shirts and shorts, while women sweated in their black abbayas on the beach.

"We're so happy to have our first view of the sea," said 15-year-old Rami Abu Khair as he stoked a beachside bonfire by the former Jewish settlement of Shirat Ayam before sunrise.

Medics at the Nasser hospital in Khan Yunis said that five people had drowned while swimming off Gush Katif.

is it looting if the buildings and the elements contained
within were left behind by their owners?

it seems to me to be more scavaging than looting.

More non-white looting...surprise surprise. LOL, j/k.

Send all the New Orleans looters over there to meet with their heathen brethren. The end is near people. Repent or burn!

I'm not sure that the people that left things behind had much choice. Besides, all the stuff in the hurricane was left behind as well.

yeah, but there's an expectation of ownership there
because they could return to claim their goods and/or
the companies that own them are still existent.

we're talking about infrastructure and goods that
were left behind by a withdrawing civilization that
have no expectation of ongoing ownership or the ability
to return for them.

just a hypothetical question, really, I don't much care
what you call it.

plus, I don't think working feverishly with an axe
in an unsafe building, as the other reply quoted defines
looting.

loot n.

1. Valuables pillaged in time of war; spoils.
2. Stolen goods.
3. Informal. Goods illicitly obtained, as by bribery.
4. Informal. Things of value, such as gifts, received on one occasion.
5. Slang. Money.

v. loot?ed, loot?ing, loots
v. tr.

1. To pillage; spoil.
2. To take as spoils; steal.

v. intr.

To engage in pillaging.

it's applicable, I guess...

Yea, except when Americans went trash-happy there it was over something stupid, like a sporting event. Palestinians are going trash-happy over something that is as pure as the driven snow.

"Two items are in high demand in Gaza today: Aluminum and mango. Hundreds of Palestinians are walking around carrying bags of mango. Plenty of mango. The fruits, taken from the orchards in Netzarim, are not yet ripe, but anyone who can put his hands on some mango does so. Halil, 63, of Gaza explained: ?We do it in order to say that this again belongs to us, the land is ours and the fruits are also ours.?

but will they plant mango trees? i doubt it.

How the hell do you know. The way you talk about Palestinians, you make them out to be the pariah group of the international community on completely childish and baseless statements that go along peurile lines such speculating that they wouldn't cultivate mangos just for spite. Jesus Christ, man.

If there wasn't any occupation of their mandated land, there would be less incentive for kids to go splodydopin' in Israel

it's their land, but the old hulks of buildings that
represent the receeding regime should be treated with
reverance and respect!

stripping them of what little value is left to better
their lives borders on inhuman.
