Why does this mushroom look like this??
    #4649444 - 09/12/05 10:58 AM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Why do these mushrooms look weird...the caps are shriveling and one of the caps is going upwards....is it still good? I stopped giving the cakes so much humidity and the caps are starting to grow a little more evenly..could they have been getting too much humidity? And is the one with the cap going upwards still good? [image][/image] [image][/image] [image][/image]

I haven't personally experienced this problem but i think you answered your own question. If you changed something and that fixed the problem then that is probably what your problem was.

I don't see any signs of high rH, they look fine. the one that is curling up is just a very mature shroom.

That looks like a mushroom virus. Are any of your stems twisted and discolered.

Because they're maturing..they'll keep growing up like that till you pick them..but they dont just keep growing forever..time to pick when they open up flat.

what do you mean by shriveling? the wavy caps? some will do that, caps form in all kinds of ways. not sure if it is from substrains or just some mutations during growth. I have had and have seen many a funky lookin shroom without anything being wrong with the grow. In first pic there are some that are wavy and some that are not, i wouldn't be concerned.
are you misting them directly?

no none of them are shriveled or discolered...except two stems have some blue but thats because I eased up on the humidity for a while because they were soaked with water and I figured thats why the caps were shriveling

it could be if you were keeping the caps wet, do they have black patches in the cap vs on the cap. like can you wipe the color off the cap? most of the time if you keep them too wet you will develop some bacterial blotch.
you say none are shriveled but figured thats why they were shriviling. are you talking about the wavyness of the caps?

You talking about the caps in the first picture? Looks similar to these..perfectly normal:

I still don't see any that are shriviling.
I don't see any that appear to have been too wet.

by fruiting at the correct time will prevent overlay.
treating it a couple of ways i guess. scrape the casing layer off and recase or lightly scratch it and recase. i am sure there are other or better ways, haven't really experienced overlay myself.
best of luck

just as you see the myc starting to break the surface of the casing layer is the rule of thumb.
don't think that the casing layer depth has anything to do with it, how deep did you make it? any patching?
