    #4649284 - 09/12/05 06:21 AM (18 years, 6 months ago)

It seams that i may have gotten a bad bad batch of peat moss. EVERY time i use it i get green mold... even after i've pc'd it for 45 min @ 15psi.

That's why you're getting mold. Peat should be pasteurized, never sterilized. The beneficial bacteria that survive during pasteurization will help to prevent molds. Also, peat has a ph of 4-6, so you need to be sure and use lime. I use hydrated lime at 5% by volume of the amount of the peat. In other words, for ten cups of peat, use 1/2 cup of hydrated lime.

Coco coir and peat are not similar. Coir has lots of nutes and can be used as a substrate just as manure can. In fact, it works better than the cow manure you get bagged up at the nursery. Peat is nutrient free, thus it is more suitable as a casing material.

Weather using coir or peat I like to make the mix add the moisture needed put into quart jars and pc for a hour and a half at 15 psi. (yeah yeah yeah I know it shouldn't take a hour and a half but results talk) and just use it out of the jars.
