Worry/Parranoia
    #4648955 - 09/12/05 03:09 AM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Well I I'm quite worried, I don't have a digicam right now so you're gonna have to put up with my ms paint effort.

I'll explain my problem,

1) Every minute or so water drips from the hood of the tank, this is due to evaporation of the water in the bottom.

2) My cakes look too humid inside, if I look directly above the cakes I see condensation and small water droplets.

The insides of the cakes are not directly in contact with the water and the temperature of the water bath is 84?F

Am I doing anything wrong?
Help!

I really hope I ain't messed this operation up, I was paranoid that my cakes were too wet after I'd pressure cooked them so this is twisting my melon man.

Maybe I have this wrong, but are your cakes still colonizing in the jar? If that's the case then you shouldn't have anything to increase humidity around the jars.

Sorry I forgot to mention, they've only been in there about 30 hours.

Also: I sat them in the water cause my room is quite cold. So i thought the bath would speed up the colonisation process

take the lid off
trapping the humidity in the chamber is just going to transfer it into your jars. you want some heat, but not that much humidity.

If you have problems keeping your jars at prime colinisation temps. then you may want to consider going to a TiT method for incubation. Using a two tub method you dont have to worry about the water increasing humidity levels around your jars. Heres a link for you. And since you already have one tub that your incubating in you only need one more.

Won't that increase the chances of contamination?

yes but thats a lower risk of failure than saturating your jars :P

do the TIT as the other dude just suggested.

Ok, I think I've F**ked up these jars but I'll learn from my mistakes.

If they don't colonise I'll try a different method next time.

Put a towel on the top and change it every few or so hours.. Should cure some humidity.

Yeah good thinking.

What sort of consistancy would you say the substrate should have?

Paste?

Paste as in sticky and soggy?
BRF substrate moisture levels should be moist, but not soaking wet.

If thats what you mean.

Sounds fine to me..
But I don't get "sticky play doh" Lmao.

If the substrate feels nice and moist, you should be good.
Other that that, wet, soggy.. No good.
