What exactly IS knotting? [pics]
    #4647584 - 09/11/05 07:47 PM (18 years, 5 months ago)

I really just need some direction on what to do with my casings. I cased 11 days ago, using 60/40 coir/verm. I have been giving them 12 hours light, 12 hours darkness. I have been fanning about once an hour since casing. My temperatures are always between 72 and 77 F. My RH is consistently above 95%, which is apparently natural, since I am not using perlite or anything to increase humidity. I mist occasionally, when the casing starts to look dry. These are all B+.

My question is, should I be doing something different? I was told I am supposed to look for "knotting" but I can't actually figure out what that is. I think that what I'm looking at is a good sign, but as this is my first REAL grow, I am stupefied as to what I'm looking for. Can anyone speculate? At what point should I begin to panic? How long should I wait for pinning?? Thanks in advance.

knotting is amall goosebumps that will form on or right below the surface. You might spot pins a couple days after knotting.

you may try cold shocking to initiate pins. throw that sucker in the refrigerator for about two hours. you should see pins within three days.

I don't cold shock directly after casing. My method is to case and then incubate. When mycelium breaks the surface of the casing, i patch that spot. i continue patching until the mycelium pokes out pretty evenly throughout the entire casing. THEN i cold shock by covering the tray and refrigerating for anywhere from two to twelve hours. then introduce light and air exchange.
So yes, i would try cold shocking again.

I've never cold shocked and I've never had a problem. Patience is key.

Well, the pans were incubated at 85F and they were cold shocked for 12 hours after that, and since they've been pretty steady 10-12 degrees lower than incubation temp, so I don't know that cold shocking is going to do anything... I'm just anxious to see pins, and I'm not sure if the bumps that I have are going to turn into them, as they have been around for a few days and aren't growing. How long do pins usually take after the appearance of knots?
