Sad story....
    #4647910 - 09/11/05 10:48 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

It seems everything keeps getting the green..It is very depressing..I love growing the mushrooms. I was so successful when I started out. I went back and retraced my steps and everything. Very clean. I didn't use any lysol or anything..But I also didn't the first time. I live in the great ol' NC. I started Growing the end of last winter. Had a successful bulk and all. It is really depressing. I have 4 jars trying to colonize now. One went bad. Two of them were from a spore syringe that had been laying around without a cap (Which was one jar that went bad). And the other two were from a spore print I had found laying around that someone sent me. Thank you whoever you are. Please everyone help me figure this out. Just include me in your shroomery prayers :-( I wasn't sure if this thread belongs here, but I am asking about cultivation problems also.

I think you kind of answered your own question. You said the syringe was laying around with the cap off and the spore print was just laying around also. Try agar plates. You can spot contams ahead of time. Then just make sure the rest of your tek is sterile and you'll be golden.

No. I am pretty sure. But even before that...Things were going bad. I miss growing so much. Which is why I wish to be included in the shroom prayers :-p. I don't know how corny that sounds...But anything that works, ya know? I can't do agar plates because I have no glovebox.

Yeah. I don't want to give up. I am going to get some more birdseed today. Hopefully Wednesday I will have enough money to order some spores...I'm trying man..I took it for granted when they would grow so easy, now I miss it.

how are you preparing your jars? are you sterilizing with a pressure cooker?

i use pc'able bags and to me, those are the easiest since i pack them, seal, pc and dump somewhere dark and warm.

you need to review your technique. if you don't have a cooker, you need to get one. if you do, you need to make sure it's operating correctly. soak your grains if you are using them. as far as jars go, i'd get some tyvek envelopes so you can seal the jars completely. also, you need to make sure your pressure cooker cools all the way down to room temps before opening, or it creates a vacuum in the jars, sucking in air before you're able to close them. put some foil around the top of the jar as well.

most importantly, you need to be certain that your spores are clean. best method is to use agar and a box with 2 holes for arms. it costs maybe $5 to make a cheapo one that works well when wiped down with alcohol and peroxide. and then transfer to liquid medium. otherwise, next best bet is to get a liquid culture going from spores. if it takes, you have a faster colonizing solution then spores which might help you beat infection.

I am going to try and make some money and buy more spores. We will see how that works.
