Spore Printing...
    #4644589 - 09/11/05 03:08 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Ok, does this sound good:

1. Cut 3in x 3in of foil
2. Sanitizes the foil by wiping both sides with 91% rubbing alcohol
3. Let alcohol evaporate completely in draft free area
4. Pick Mushroom, and cut cap off
5. Put sewing needle through middle of mushroom cap
6. Put mushroom cap in middle of foil and cover with a sterilized drinking glass (making sure there is a small gap to let humidity out)
7. Leave for 12 hours undisturbed in draft free area
8. Pick up mushroom cap after 12 hours by pin and dry as you normally would
9. Fold 3 sides of foil, leaving 1 open
10. Put in desiccant chamber to allow any moisture to be absorbed
11. Fold final side of foil after 5 hours in desiccant chamber

Is that right?

that'll work. after step 1, i fold foil in half to make it easier to fold latter and then place cap on one of the halves. i also leave the cap to print for 24 hours to get a good dark heavy spore deposit.

Sounds good to me. We all have our own teks when it comes to printing I think.

Well this is how I like to do it. I like to get my foil ready like this That way when the print is done you have these flaps to fold over.

I then get a half pint jar (wide mouth) and prepare it like this. I ditch the disk and silicone in a tyvek disk. This will allow the cap to dry a little as sits in the jar. (Which causes more spores to drop and prevents the cap from rotting. Will also allow the prints to dry once the mushroom cap is removed.)

Next put in the foil and cover with the lid. Put some foil on top and pc for one hour at 15 psi.

Now uncover and wipe off and your little print chamber is ready.

Now take the jar to your mushroom chamber and loosen the top but don?t remove it.

I like to put a pin in each of the mushroom caps I?m going to print.

Cut the shroom just below the cap and put it on the foil in the jar as fast as you can. Easy to do since the jar lid is loose.

Put it in a glovebox or where you like to do your work.

In 24 hrs open up and take out the cap by the pin (now we know what the pin is for) and put the cap back on. Let it sit for 24 hrs again to let the spores dry.

Once dry fold up foil and store in a cool dry place

My version. I do all this crap cause of contams and cause I hate to clean anything that my spores are gonna touch with alc...(just a me thing)

If I dont have tyvek, which I dont..

Would a coffee filter work?

And how would I sterilize it?

No don't use a coffee filter.

I do almost the same thing that you wrote, except:
- I'll leave it to sit for roughly 18 hours
- I don't leave a gap for humidity. The glass is supposed to keep the cap from drying out, as well as protecting it from contaminants. I've never had problems with rot.
- As soon as I make the print, I just plop it in a Ziplock bag, end of story. The print will dry out on its own. It could get smudged on the way into the Ziplock, but that's just cosmetic. The rest is easy.

Just make sure your hands are clean, of course. And if you do the Ziplock, only open it when you are ready to drop the print in, then close it fast, to safeguard against contaminants.
- Magash is right. Everyone has their own specific technique, but the concept is basic, and the same for everyone.

I was nervous before making my first print. Really, you just want to make sure everything is clean as can be, then everything else is just procedural.

Could you just make the spore print in the ziploc bag?

Then when making the syringes it would be pretty easy as well. I would think the only worry would be contams.

^Hmmmm... I don't see why not.  That's actually a pretty good idea.

- You're not *supposed to handle the cap with your fingers, but I just wash thoroughly with antibacterial soap, then rub my fingers with rubbing alcohol, and pick up/put down the caps that way.  Haven't had any problems yet (knock on wood).

(goodnight)

-actually, now that I think about it, humidity and condensation could be a problem if you were printing inside a Ziplock, since the airspace around the cap would be so small.  But it would be great if it worked.

OK goodnight for real now.  *yaaawwnnn

actualy a little humidity helps to make a good print, I usualy get two prins per
cap, both left for 24hrs, with the second one I place a drop of water in the cap
to help keep the humidity up so that more spores drop
