Good Mushroom Strain for Mediterranean Climate?
    #4643853 - 09/10/05 09:36 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

Hi, I just moved to the west coast of America, (San Francisco/Bay Area, California) and i'm interested into what strain would be best for this climate.  The average temperature is high 50's to low 60's with a good amount of humidity.  Here's a link for the month to month temp average: http://www.cityrating.com/citytemperature.asp?City=San+Francisco.  Thanks people

i'd love to know that too, but getting a fish tank heater , or a heating pad, you'll be all set. (to raise from 50s-60s to 70s(fruiting)-80s(colonizing), you may need bigger one)

Cambodians are known for fruiting in cooler climates. Brazilians, and south Americans like cooler temps also.

To tell you the truth you shouldnt be growing cubensis in that climate, its perfect for Psilocybe cyanescens. This is the most potent psilocybe mushroom on the planet one dose is 1.5g dry weight.
Heres a link on how to grow them

As long as you maintain something near the ideal temperatures and humidity at different stages of growth, there is no reason why you can't grow any cubensis strain indoors in SF. Most people keep their homes heated in SF to the low 70's, and that's just about right for fruiting. For the vegetative stage (starting a culture from spores or liquid culture) you'll need to use an incubator for optimum temps, 82-86?F. I don't think the humidity in SF is high enough for growing cubes outdoors, so outdoor cultivation except in a greenhouse is not an issue.

It's generally recommended to start with cubes because they are the easiest species to grow. Look at the tub-in-tub incubators that are inexpensive to make and very effective at maintaining an ideal temperature.

I was not meaning pan cyans, that has almost the same parameters as cubensis, so before you tell people to ignore others comments learn what your talking about, the climate he discribed is perfect for psilocybe cyans, its cool weather with a lot of humidity.

Okay, thanks for the input people  To tell you the truth, I don't think anyone uses heat in this apartment so i'm at the whim of the elements here.  I'll look into a heating pad.  Here's a question, how do you accurately measure the temperature in the terranium?  The obvious answer being use a thermometer!  But if the heating pad is under the terranium, I believe the temperature on the bottom surface would be much hotter than the air, don't you think?  Thanks again.
