Panaeolus Pinning Problem
    #4643138 - 09/10/05 08:27 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

I'll make this short and sweet. I am attempting to grow some pans, and have had incredible luck with many kinds of cubes in the past. I am completely automated (a system of my own design) with air exchange and humidification. I have completely colonized and cased cow a shit/vermiculite substrate (50/50) with a cow shit/vermiculite casing layer (50/50). It has been three long, excruciating weeks since they have been in the fruiting chamber and not one pin has formed. I have a sixty watt bulb over my friends (12hours on / 12 off, also automated), but have also tried indirect sunlight for 2 of the 3 weeks. It stays around 75 degrees at all times (within the parameters of all tek's and faq's I have read). My only recourse is to case again and then place directly back into the chamber. I may have let the casing layer colonize for to long before exposing to light (4 days in the dark), though I have not seen any indication in my reading that overlay would be a problem. All I need from you guys are suggestions. As many as you can possibly provide. I am willing to try anything to save this batch. Thanks!!!

keep at 90% humidity.....try to get case layer 1/2" thick(.... and keep it misted till you see pins.... indirect sun is ok.. dont let 60w lite get too close

Pans like wet feet and dry caps, Ive allways done mine without a fruiting chamber because they need a lot of fresh air exchange
You might be misting it directly also just mist the sides and top of whatever container you are using

A casing layer isnt supposed to be made out of poo, it is a non nutritive layer designed to provide humidity to top of substrate

Ive never spawned Pans to poo without them contamming, I like using a coir/verm mix for the casing layer

Yeah, the only reason I tried poo casing layer was to reduce contamination. I've had peat moss/vermiculite casing layers get contaminated in the past when doing cube's, and I figured that if they fruit off of it in the wild, maybe trying wouldn't hurt. I like the re-casing idea, I'll try misting the chamber too. Maybe my bubbler isn't providing enough moisture. Thanks guys!! Any more advice you might have is certainly welcome.
