flashes...
    #4642020 - 09/10/05 02:33 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

For the last year or so, every so often, i've been experiencing sudden flashes of light, wether it be at daytime or at night. They look exactly like photo flashes, except when i'm around someone and i ask them if they saw a flash, they say no.

Has anyone been having the same thing?

You might want to see a doctor about that. I'm serious.

Maybe not yet. But it sounds to me like it might be a symptom of a brain tumor. I'm not saying it is, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

LOL "It's not bothering me."

I agree with Paradigm - if you're seriously seeing flashes like that - go see a doctor. It may not bother you, but it may be the beginning of a serious issue or related in some way or another to another physiological/psychological dysfunction that should be checked out. There are simply too many possibilities of danger for you to ignore it, or brush it off.

Are you kidding?

It's obviously his enlightenment going up to the next level, or an alien brain implant recharging.

Call your doctor and ask if he has been seeing flashes of light no one else sees.

next time someone says they have a deja vu though, i'll just tell them something's wrong with their brain. i'm sure back in the time doctors used to drill holes in their patients' brains when they mentioned their feelings of deja vu.

Nah, brain drills were only to get the devil out.

Deja vu was probably to common to be caused by the devil.

I hope you're not going to stick by this attitude and not see a doctor. I'd hate to see you die of a brain tumor because you'd rather believe that the flashes were some supernatural phenomenon.

I would do as the other posters suggest and see a doctor, if for no other reason than to rule that possibility out.

One physical explanation is that it could be ocular migraines, or something similar. Ocular migraines affect the eyes only, and there is no pain associated with them. Some migraine sufferers know the onset of a headache is near because of the flashes, while others can experience the ocular symptoms and never develop a full-blown headache.

There are many people who have ocular migraines only and never develop the headache itself. I guess my point is, going to see the doctor is a good idea, but it's not necessary to jump to worse-case-scenario conclusions like brain tumors.

I once had a visual distortion right side of my peripheral field that looked like streaming digits ala the Matrix, only in vivid blue for approximately 2 hours. This was before the movie, BTW, so it kind of freaked me out. Soon afterward I developed the flashes, and a year later the headaches began. Diagnosis was migraines. They eventually went away, thank god.

But then again super natural phenomenons are a hell of alot more fun than brain cancer.

BTW-- I did want to add that IMHO, a physical cause does not preclude the possibility of a spiritual explanation, but may exist alongside it.  Those who alter their brain chemistry and thus experience a different level of reality from the norm are still operating through physical means.  Meditation also works to alter brain waves, which introduces different states of consciousness, but it still is a physical mechanism that allows it to take place.  I don't know if I'm expressing this clearly...

aha, but is meditation an effect of a physical mechanism? since true meditation requires no effort, what causes the pure attentive state of mind you reach when you meditate?

here, i got this thread back on the tracks of S&P...:smirk:

Good job!  You do raise an interesting point, though.  Is meditation something that requires no effort?  More specifically, is "not doing something" an effort?

From a different angle:  for a non-smoker to begin smoking, they must do something.  But for a smoker to quit smoking, it's a matter of "not doing," which is extremely difficult to do.  So... is the act of not doing something actually doing something?

God, it makes so much sense on the inside, but when I try to write it down, I sound like some pompous, dry old philosopher, asking questions just for the sake of trying to sound wise.  I swear that's not how it feels on the inside.

imagine treating enlightenment with modern medicine (that has been done before - i.e. you may have nothing wrong with you, but at least you need not expect a lobotomy).

Now if nothing is wrong with you, & if you are a good meditator, even after the cure you will be insightful anyway,
or at least continue to see between the cracks of illusion.

I am surprised more people don't see an awful lot more things that just don't fit into consensual reality.
