In the beginning... there were pins... but now, the next generation has arrived - SHROOMS!
    #4641982 - 09/10/05 02:23 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Haha. Sorry for the crazy thread title, I'm just a bit psyched right now.

Here they are at 3.5 days old now - some have already broken through the veil. Lipa Yai is the strain - not that it matters, heh.

Cake 1

Cake 2

Cake 3 - there are quite a few more pins near growing from the bottom. I'm not worrying about this cake anymore as it is just a late bloomer.

Damn right man.  I actually just saw that as I was browsing through today's "headlines". hah.  They're looking mighty hardy.. mmm.

When do you guys think I should pick mine?  You think I should wait til tomorrow when all of the veils have broken?  Some of these guys look like real fatties and haven't broken their veils yet.. whereas others are smaller and have already broken through.

And yeah, they're placed directly on perlite.  I've read that it doesn't hurt as long as the perlite isn't flooded with water - helps spawn a few pins near the bottom because of the increased moisture, compared to the air.

If they are for you: Before the veil breaks.

If they are for sale: after the veil breaks.

Yeah, thats what I've heard as well.  These are gonna be solely for myself and some friends - I'll be sampling them first of course.

Is it okay to pick a few off right now - or should I just wait til all of them are done?  I'm gonna ask my g/f if I can borrow her dad's little scale to weigh these guys out today.. if I do end up picking a few.  Would be a nice treat for tonight.

way to go, congrats. i never had any problems by putting the cakes right on the perlite either, got a lot more around the bottom as you decribed.
you got a new approach i haven't seen before, fruiting the cake on its side. looks good, allowing more surface area exposed for fruiting.

The world is like a ride in an amusement park. And when you choose to go on it, you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it's very brightly coloured and it's very loud and it's fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time and they begin to question, is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, "Hey - don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because, this is just a ride... And we... kill those people.

- Bill Hicks

Nice work silk. I can see in the corner you have the same crappy humidity/temp guage as me. My humidity needle probobly wouldn't go below 70 if I left that thing out in death valley for a few days, but at least it gives me some idea of if the humidity is going up or down. Let's hear it for budget grows with big harvests.

Yeah, I'm glad it worked out fine for my first grow.  I'm far from done yet however.. I'm still waiting on 3 casings to start fruiting.

Hah, thanks!  Yeah, I saw some pins forming underneath the first day so I decided to sit it on its side.  The main reason I put it on the perlite, besides letting it get more moisture, was because the cake would keep rolling around on the lid and wasn't very stable.  The uneven perlite surface helped to keep the cake in place and stopped it from squishing some of the upcoming shrooms.
