How exactly does a spore turn into myc?
    #4618972 - 09/04/05 09:51 AM (18 years, 4 months ago)

I was thinking this last night. Does the tiny little spore open up like a seed? I'm curious to know how that all works.

I would suggest checking out your local library for intro to fungus/mycology books. They are really helpful to clear the whole thing up. I am a newbie but here is my 2 cents...
The spore will come in contact with nutes, water, and CO2/O2. It swells up to almost double its dry diameter (actually, spores contain anywhere from 30-70% fresh water inside them for some reasons unknown--possibly solvent). While the swelling is occuring I believe that Hyphae (the tubelike root network is forming inside). The spore eventually is broken down (or opened) by the hyphae and this hyphae continues to grow grow and spread. Its like a seed. Spores are amazingly complex for how tiny they are.

I am, however, a very curious individual.
I also try to be helpful.

A spore spreads by cell divison when in nutrient solution. It builds a mycllicum network then which grows mushrooms.

The spore doesn't 'split' like a seed, but the mycelium grows from the germ pore at the pointed end of the spore. You can see a sequence of pictures of a spore germinating at the link below.

i was reading and came across something that said spores can be both sexual and asexual, true?

The mycelium the spores produce wants to mate, just like all the rest of us, male or female. It's how we're programmed by evolution.

Read from TMC from Paul Stamets. Contain a lot of useful info

First of all, spores are uninucleate and haplo?d. This mean that they only have one nucleate and half of the chromosome needed for the specie. Spore have a sex and must meet other spore mate to produce offspring. If the spore have a sufficient moist environment, they will produce micelial branch and later, mycelium network. Once the mycelium network meet another complementary one, one from the another "sex", the cell wall separating them will fall, and genetic and cytoplasmic exchange will happen. All the resulting mycelium will be binucleate and dykariotic. This mean that each cell will contain two nucleate and will have the full chromosome complement. At this point, mycelium growth is suppose to be faster. Once the mycelium is well established, he reach a colossal growth rate and with a favorable environment, pin formation occurs and later, fruit body.  :mushroom2:
