text/workbook suggestions for teaching students music reading & theory
    #4639654 - 09/09/05 11:06 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

i've been teaching cello lessons, but up until now all of my students were advanced students that had surpassed their previous teacher and were sent to me already knowing how to read (at least) bass clef. i have recently taken on a new student and she is a complete beginner. she can't read any music, but she is 24 and should be able to understand and learn from a well-written, simple college text book on music reading/basic theory.

i've never had to teach anybody how to read music, but i want to teach all beginner students i have (now and in the future) how to read bass, tenor, and treble. when playing cello, you have to read all of them sooner or later and i don't know of any good materials a student could take home and learn from. of course, i could teach music reading during lessons, but that is unneccessary and would be costly for a student, so i don't want to go that route.

i know a few of you here teach music lessons, so hopefully you have been through this before.
