Getting by without a pressure cooker?
    #4639320 - 09/09/05 09:01 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Okay fellas, you're not going to believe this, but I'm new to this, heh. I've been wanting to grow for a long time and I think it's about time for me to try it out, at least while it's relatively warm. I am going by the "PF-Tek for Simple Minds" (http://www.fungifun.org/pf/pf_en.htm) which seems like it was geared towards noobs like me. I'm at school right now (without a car), and the only places within relative walking distance are Kroger and Rite Aide, I doubt either of which will have any of the materials I need, so I think I'll just buy online and get it shipped to my apartment.

Now, I am just trying this out just to see if it can be done in my living situation. I think I'm only going to do a few jars at the most, I don't plan on consuming while at school, my 'adventures' tend to destroy my ability to retain useful information for meaningful amounts of time. So basically, if I succeed I will either give them away to a friend or put them in an air-tight bag and stick them in the freezer until thanksgiving break or whenever.

Here's my problem - I don't have a pressure cooker. I do, however have a pot with a lid, and I read in the tutorial that it is possible to use that, but I was wondering with what success it could be done. In the pressure cooker only 1/2" of water should be at the bottom..how hot would I want to heat the water? How often should I take the lid off and put more in? Should I try to seal the top?

I looked around for spores and "Psilocybe Cubensis Mexi-Cub-Mexico" from HawksEye seems like the best answer. It can grow in a wide range of temperatures, large yield and easy to cultivate. Unfortunately they are out of them at the moment..anyone know where I can get similar strains? Or, how long does it take them to restock?

One more question - how long can spores last in the syringe? I only plan on using a little bit, and most likely use the rest later.

Thanks guys!

You can sterilize rice cakes in a pot like that, put a rag or a rack under jars inside so the bottom of pot doesnt get the rice too hot, fill it up with water until its halfway up the jars, boil it, steady boil not violent, cover and let it cook for 1 1/2 hrs, dont remove lid until you are ready to inoculate jars.
Oh dont ever freeze shrooms they will keep for a couple of months in a bag once they are dry.
Try cambodians for your first grow, thats what I started with its one of the fastest colonizers and it readily fruits, Ive had some jars fruit invitro in the inncubator in the dark.

The only place that has them in stock is Ralphstersspores.com, and the site does not take credit card or paypal or anything like that, you have to send him cash/money order, seems kinda sketchy. Here's the link for the Cambodian: http://www.ralphstersspores.com/index_files/Page651.html

This site ALSO has the Mexican Mexi-cube, which was what I was looking at originally...can anyone vouch for them?
