happyness is an emotion you experience, achieving it is a matter of figuring out what triggers this emotion in your mind and doing it

I like the word joy better. But for me it is surrendering to the flow of the Universe in my life each moment. The more I can say yes to everything that life brings to me without resistance the more joy I experience. It's a lot of warrior work and completely worthwhile.

'Happiness is a side effect of a meaningful life,' according to the late, great psychiatrist and concentration camp survivor Victor Frankl. Sayings like, 'If you chase the bluebird of happiness, it will fly from you,' imply what Frankl was saying. Happiness is an effect of something greater - call it fulfillment if you wish - it like 'the icing on the cake' but it is not the substance of the matter. There is no spiritual precept which states in effect: 'Thou shalt be happy,' because happiness seems to be dependent upon outer circumstances, upon situations. It is not an abiding constant - a sustaining 'background' that co-exists with dire circumstances, with fear, grief, despair. I contrast the notion of happiness with that of 'joy.' It may be taken as a matter of semantics, but in my own walk, I have discerned a presence at my Center that is clearly not happiness, but is a 'sustaining presence' that is better named joy. When outer circumstances are pleasurable, joy can expand to ecstatic proportions, but when things are bleak, I can still discern its presence. The same cannot be said for happiness. For me, the word joy suggests a transcendental Source whereas happiness does not. I further remember my sad attempts to walk around with a stoned smile on my face in the attempt to remain happy at all costs. Alas, it was not honest, it was not grounded in the nature of things.

I think that many people will give you a lot of good (and bad) answers to your question.

But what happiness is, and how to achieve it, are questions that only you will be able to answer for yourself.

markos, yes, not totally reliant on external, not totally reliant on internal. Both also can destroy happiness. Most people search external happiness, which stand 'alone' can not lead to it.
But at least, it is possible, to rot externaly while always be happy internally, even if it is a 'lie' like you called it. But happiness is still, what could remain inside, even if it's kind of 'ill'.
On the other side, you can be really happy with very few (external) things...
I think, it is more dependent on internal causes, but externalities can also make it much more of a great..

some whirling tail-biting snake ?

edit: the true balance between internal and external ?

stimulation runs from
off -> optimal -> overload.
at optimal one calls it pleasurable
at overload one calls it pain

the trick if there is one is to be moderate, and have more pleasure than pain.
then share that.

I don't know...I just lost a fairly lengthy bunch of carefully selected quotes from Victor Frankl. S**t! Sorry, I'm not gonna go through that again, but I will recommend his book The Will to Meaning to anyone who wants a brilliant take on the source of happiness in human existence.

I think that attempting to define happiness is useless. If you can feel happy without knowing what it is, shouldn't that be good enough?

One should not seek to find what happiness is for the purpose of gaining it as much as for just understanding what it is.
