poo and moisture content
    #4638916 - 09/09/05 07:15 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

hey gang. it's time to get some opinions on my first time doing bulk horse poop. 2 days since spawning and no myclelial growth within the poo. however, the grains have fuzzed out pretty good and it seems like they are about ready to begin colonization very slowly (though the fuzzyness could be pointing to myc not wishing to move onto the poop and simply buffering themselves?)

i am concerned that my substrate is too wet. one container is beginning to smell funky. could this smell be due to poo fermentation? some tips on guaging the moisture levels (without a device)? how dark should the substrate be?

Poo doesnt ferment...mmmm....poo alcohol...the fuzzy grains sound pretty good...here is my suggestion...let it inoculate for 3-4 more days...but dont look at it...AT ALL....then look...and see how its doing...some things do best, when nothing is done at all

i have read that the grains can ferment in the poo (from what i believed to be a reliable source). if that's not the case, then at least one container may be contamminationizing due to the nasty sweet smell emitted.

to pressure cook and bag that shit or not...

the other 2 containers i will try to move outside and neglect.

Horse poo can ferment.

How did you prepare your horse poo?

If you pastuerized it over 180 degrees F. it can ferment and get bacterial contams.

If your horse poo is too wet...it will get bacterial contams.

You need to make sure to get the right water content when working with horse poo.
You only want a few drops of water dripping out when you squeeze it.

Hopefully your grains getting fuzzy is a good sign...and that it will colonize your horse poo.

good luck!~

got some tenn stud unpasturized. added water and verm, mixed in spawn, covered and incubated.

i have 3 containers. all have diff moisture content now and we'll see which takes off. only 1 was making funk smells, no contams founds, more verm added to suck up water at bottom of container.

also, inner temp was very hot i suppose. bottom of container was about 95deg. yes h poop surely puts off much heat.

placed the smallest container into a usps tyvek envelope and let it incubate in there. see how the good air exchange fares for it.

agar is right when he says most noobs tend to overwet-i'm sure thats what i've done-even though i knew it going in  . but on the other hand, now that i've made mosifications i'm sure it'll turn around  :sun:
