Diatomaceous Earth as buffer?
    #4638026 - 09/09/05 01:26 PM (18 years, 4 months ago)

I have had this stuff for awhile, and was always told that it was simply crushed oyster shells. The only warning on the package with regards to humans or animals, is if the dust gets in your eyes or is breathed in.

It is literally talc powder fine consistency.

Will this make a suitable buffer?

It is actually the glass shell of micro sea creatures from along time ago, they mine it from the bottoms of extinct oceans, if I remember my discovery channel.

it's not a buffer (as in something to absorb waste acids from mycelial growth) but is very useful at preventing fly larvae from growing. if flies arrive and lay eggs, their larvae die from being ground up on this stuff.

so go ahead and use it if you like. can't see any harm in it
