Pets being left behind in New Orleans.
    #4637421 - 09/09/05 12:29 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

I totally realize that when evacuating residents of a major city hit by a natural disaster that you're a little short on space and food that's being rationed out to everyone, but I dunno, I just think it's fucked that they're making people leave behind their pets. Lots of people won't leave for just that reason.

It's been a few years since my cat died, and I totally wish I had a dog. More than I want anything material in this world, I want a canine buddy. And I can absolutely imagine not being able to leave him behind..

I'd be all like 'show us your TITTAYS and I'll let your pet come on board'.

Yeah man...pets can become so close to you that they truly are family. I cannot imagine leaving behind a pet...it would be like leaving behind a brother or sister.

I always thought that when you adopt an animal, weather it's a cat, a dog or a hampster... you're taking that creature under your wing, it's now a part of your family.  Leaving him-or her- behind is like leaving a part of your family behind.

If you want the responsibility of keeping a pet, then take it, that's the freedom of choice...but that critter depends on you.  Don't leave him behind.  I would never consider leaving my Minoo.  He's my baby.

He gives me more emotional support then some of the humans in my life.

Yeah, this is exactly what I'm saying. The idea of looking as a pet as a "possession" that can be left behind, or as, in a way, a life partner that you totally have an unspoken contract with, where you provide for them and there's love between both of you. You provide them with food and they provide you with more than they'll ever know.

Yeah, I would totally buck, if they tried to make me leave my buddy behind. I had a dog that lived from my 9th birthday until my 24th birthday. She was my best friend the whole time with no breaks. I would seriously fuck somebody up over my Sally.

Fuckers!

A lot of the animals must be sick and dying from the water though also :frown:

I saw a video feed of this doggy on a front porch surrounded by water and it made me so sad for that dog. He looked so lonely and scared. Poor puppies! :frown:

I wonder if this has anything to do with it?

I still can't decide if it's over paranoid, but lab animals running around might explain their worries...

That's pretty scary! I would think that they would have prepared for any kind of disaster, but we are talking about humans.

Back in Holland or Germany, this wouldn't even be an issue, period. They take dogs with them to restaurants, weddings and stores. Keep pictures of them in their wallets. They are family members. And I see it no other way as well.

I would rather die with my Misha, than leave her to die alone.

And if you tell the rescuers that, they label you as "delirious."

My cat also likes to hang in the bathroom sink. It must be a cat hangout spot or something.

Not every dog or cat is someones pet though. I don't think its right but some people especially poor people like in the areas afflicted get dogs strictly as cheap burglar alarm systems. They keep them chained up outside all day and night all year around. Thats just the way it is. That dog isn't a part of that persons family and it is viewed as property to them that can be left behind to fend for themselves.
