Anybody know off hand what these are?
    #4637311 - 09/09/05 11:52 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hello. I found these in the lawn of my friend's house, in a woodchip-laden garden. The area is central Connecticut. About a week ago, there were some in the same spot that had little white dots on them, so we thought they might be some type of amanita. These don't appear to have that characteristic, though everything else about them is similar. Anyway, if you could tell me what they might be, that would be cool. Thanks!

Sorry dude:

Accurate mushroom descriptions

It is critical that you describe mushrooms fully and accurately in order to get a proper identification.

A good picture of the mushrooms is invaluable, but not required.
Along with the pictures YOU ARE REQUIRED to provide the following data:

* Habitat (where [woods, pasture, state,province,country, altitude] and what [soil, dung, wood (dead, living, what kind of wood?)] does it grow on)
* Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)
* Characteristics of the stem (length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)
* Characteristics of the cap (diameter,color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
* Spore print color (very important!)
* Color that the mushroom bruises
* Scent of the mushroom
* Anything else you might find important

Sorry about that, I've never done this before.

Grown in soil, but with woodchips on top in a front lawn. Central Connecticut, temps been in the 60's-80's recently, altitude is lower than Vermont but higher than New Jersey. The gills are tan/khaki color, with a veil that is white and fleshy and comes off a while after the cap has opened (you can see it starting to come off in the last picture). Stems are solid, white, thick, and varying in length of about an inch to a few inches. Caps vary from dark brown to light brown, varying again in diameter, I think it's convex (I don't remember what these terms mean) and are what I would call bulbous. I'm making a spore print now, and I think they bruise blue (but I'll check on that too.) They smell "mushroomy," like a basic mushroom scent that you'd smell on white, packaged mushrooms- seems like they'd taste yummy. Sorry again, I hope this info can help identify them.
