Canadians beat U.S. Army to New Orleans suburb 08 Sep 2005 05:08:07 GMT
Source: Reuters BATON ROUGE, La., Sept 7 (Reuters) - A Canadian search-and-rescue team reached a flooded New Orleans suburb to help save trapped residents five days before the U.S. military, a Louisiana state senator said on Wednesday.
The Canadians beat both the Army and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. disaster response department, to St. Bernard Parish east of New Orleans, where flood waters are still 8 feet (2.4 metres) deep in places, Sen. Walter Boasso said.
"Fabulous, fabulous guys," Boasso said. "They started rolling with us and got in boats to save people."
"We've got Canadian flags flying everywhere."
The stricken parish of 68,000 people was largely ignored by U.S. authorities who scrambled to get aid to New Orleans, a few miles (km) away. Boasso said residents of the outlying parishes had to mount their own rescue and relief efforts when Hurricane Katrina roared ashore on Aug. 29.
The U.S. government response to the disaster has been widely criticized. Politicians

I was watching that on the news...The locals were in complete disbelief that Canadian troops were down there lending a hand long before any of them even seen anyone from FEMA or the national guard.
Kind of makes a guy wonder where the 38 billion that was spent of FEMA recently went and what it was spent on?...

Sounds good to me...we can move 'em to Winnipeg. I give 'em 2 weeks before they freeze to death.

The word 'Cajun' is derived from the word 'Canadian'...

If the Canadians ever declare war you guys are fucked
Smashing job by the Canadians but big thumbs down to the US rescue effort. It's humiliating, I'd be damn embarassed if something happened here in Holland and the Belgians where to arrive onsite first.
It's becoming redundent to say your rescue efforts suck so I'll try a new angle: Are you guys aware that September 11 is nigh and you've got troops in Iraq, troops tied up in New Orleans and an emergency response that sucks.

No it's not. It is a derivative of Acadian, from Acadia, which is the area they came from, mostly Canada but I think part of Maine also.

"Kariouk is interested in linguistics and cultural etymology, which is the science which traces back to where specific words originate. For example, the word Cajun actually comes from the word Canadian. People would say Canadian so quickly that it sounded like the "d" was replaced with a "j", turning Canadian into Cajun." source
I also found a link supporting your theory as well, so it would appear that we are both right (or wrong)

It's more full on than the Belgians beating the Dutch in your hypothetical, as the distances of Canada and the US make it like Indonesia getting to Sydney before the Aussies do. The US has got to strip a lot of dead wood off their big red tape machine. What a clusterfuck performance!

Kariouk is wrong. The Acadians were French settlers exiled from Acadia in the 1700s many of whom fled to Louisiana. http://www.acadian-cajun.com/exla.htm
Just say the words Acadian Cadian Cajin Cajun. Doesn't work near as well with Canadian. Too many jumps.
Kariouk also says English is "close" to German but that is incorrect. They don't even have the same sentence structure. French is "close" to Spanish, Polish is "close" to Russian, English is not "close" to German.

hey the u.s. provides the calvary. everyone is always waiting for the calvary to get there.. my little brother does search and rescue for the navy. he and many others were called up to be sent for search and rescue ops, but then they were told to stay put, they were not needed.. yeah 20 helo's and about 60 men would have been some small help. of course you know they serve a much greater purpose staying here and getting drunk every other night.

Well, if I and all the other soliders in the US army werent overseas (my situation now), or constantly training for going overseas, we would have been given the opportunity to help.
I would have loved nothing more than to once carry out a mission that was focused on helping the american people.
Oh, and yeah, the National Gaurd, you know, the guys that handle this stuff normally, are all downrange as well. Oh, and the reserves too.
