Shroom picking

OK I believe its time for me to start to pick my shrooms that are developed. I've read that it is best to pick the shroom right before the cap breaks off of the stem and starts to form like an umbrella because at this point the shroom is more potent then if I were to let it break off and form like an umbrella. Is this true or do I want the cap to form like an umbrella? Also when I pick them should I twist and pull the off of the cake at the base of the stem or should I use a knife and cut it at the base of them stem?
Thanx

let them grow more. the membrane from the stem to the cap needs to fall away from the cap first.
to soon looks like this:

there is no documented facts on when a mushroom is most potent.
If you pick the mushrooms before the veil tears...you won't have spores all over the inside of your fruiting chamber. And they look hella cool dried this way.
If you let the caps open and flatten out...you can make spore prints.
You should grab the mushroom close to the base of it and twist it off.

I'm not to sure what the membrane is (I'm not the brightest person)so you want it to look like an umbrella then. Cuz I've only eaten shrooms twice and both time the cap was still part of the stem in which it didn't look like a umbrella. Here's a pic of what it looks like. Also what is that white fluffy stuff at the base of the stem next to the cake. This is the first time I've seen it. It just must of appeared while I was gone. Is that good or bad?(if I can put it in this post, since I'm new to this board and never done it before)

what does BRF stand for. Sorry I'm a newbie at this and don't know all the terminology. I just followed the pf tek i think. vermiculite, brown rice, and water. I believe it is the Indian orisha strain. I've tried growing some many times its unreal this is the farthest I've gotten before. The first few times trying to grow before I found out about this site I was using popcorn seeds as my substrate.

so do you think I should pick them cuz I'm still totally not sure if I should yet. At least I've heard that they are more potent when the cap hasn't broken off of the stem because they are still maturing and shrooms that are fully mature that look like an umbrella are less potent than shroom that are still maturing

The idea is only less potent by weight. Meaning you won't lose any psilocybin, just that the mushrooms will get bigger and not add anymore meaning you will have to eat a little more. I'm of this opinion, but as Roadkill said, it's not hard science.
He makes a great point about the spores, they are messy and suck. When the cap opens up like an umbrella is when the spores will start to drop. I like to pick before then.
The membrane is that thin delicate white thing that goes from the underside of the cap to the stem. you can see in that picture above of the harvested shrooms that it has separated from the cap (and is attached to the stem on some fruits). Also notice that those aren't "open like an umbrella" yet, they are still incurved. I would harvest either right now, or as soon as you see that membrane separate. BTW, The membrane is usually called a "partial veil" or just "veil".
