Time from pins to pickin's?
    #4633878 - 09/08/05 12:59 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

AFOAF is about to drop a casing in the ole chamber but she is afraid that she will not be in town when the 1st flush harvest takes place.
After a casing is fully colonized and knots are forming how many days usually will it be before the first flush needs picking?
Would it be best to pick no matter what in 4 days then initiate the 2nd flush just before she skips town? We are all newbies to the whole casing process so all advice is appreciated. Thanks!

well, for me, on average, it takes about 4 days in the fruiting chamber for first signs of pins to show up, and then about another 4 days to get fully matured fruits(they grow very quickly once pins pop up).

So I would say 8-10 days to get fully matured fruits once it is in the FC.

After only 4 days in the FC...i'm not sure there will be a whole lot to be picked, except some really small pins. Depends on how long she will be out of town. I'd just let it do it's thing, so long as she has a source of Fresh air.

Thanks... she wont be gone too long. Are there any problem associated with leaving a mature mushroom just chillin for a few days?

Personally, I have noticed that it usually takes about 7 days to see pinning (after birthing), and takes 4-5 days from pinning to picking. Of course, I have different temps, humidity, technique and strains than the previous guy. So far, our average is 10 days.

^Like he says, though, a bit of air circulation is necessary for pinning to occur.

The only downside would be the veil breaking and spores dropping on your casing. It leaves purple swirls but leaving them there wont be bad.
