Finally PINS! Q: Can I flip a cake if shrooms grow underneath?
    #4633244 - 09/08/05 08:49 AM (18 years, 7 months ago)

After 8 days in the FC, my cakes finally showed their first pins yesterday morning. The following pics are from this morning - they've grown considerably.

First cake.

Second cake.

Third cake. Didn't see any pins - but when I looked under it, there was one very small one. I did not flip the cake yet however.

Close-up of first cake. Do the pins look healthy?

This is the second cake. Here is my question - can I do this? -flip the cake on its side so that the shrooms may grow from both top and bottom? When I looked under it, I saw this - even MORE pins than there were on the top.

They are all PF cakes - dunked/coldshocked and then rolled in verm.

The shrooms will grow the way they are gonna grow regardless of how you flip the cake. Usually the ones that grow from the bottom tend to be the bigger because they draw up the moisture from the perlite.

Hmm.. thats what I've gathered so far by looking at the other threads asking this. I think I'm gonna place them directly on the perlite now. It isn't soaking wet, so hopefully I'll get more pins.

Na. Dont put them directly on perlite bro. Just let em do their thang. Heres a pic of mine at 8 days.
Try not to handle them so much either bro.

Directly on the perlite won't hurt either:

It does tend to get messy with the verm on the perlite.

The verm or the shrooms?

Ah, well if thats the only reason then I dont mind it.

The only thing I didn't like about placing the cakes on the lids was that the lids were getting lots of water condensation.  Huge water droplets were forming between the lid and the cake.. that can't be good for the myc right?

At least with perlite, I know that I wont get water droplets forming which may harm the myc.

Well, cakes in general are pretty resistant to contams, but my problem with using lids is that they rust a hell of alot faster sitting on the perlite over time. I get 4 cubic ft bags of perlite, so chucking it out is no big deal.

Goddamn. These guys are growing FAST. How many days does a pin take to mature into a full-grown mushy? 3 or 4 days?

I flipped my cakes over and here they are about 4 days later:

Pins are already forming on the bottom again!

Haha damn man. Your mushrooms seem to be enjoying the moist perlite more than the light coming in. The one at the top-right looks like its almost hugging the perlite. haha.

Edit: Oh wait, I'm an idiot. This pic is AFTER you flipped the cakes I see. Nevermind then.. lol
