Share the Spirit?
    #4629784 - 09/07/05 12:20 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

As I have moved into spiritual study and application, I find that I feel disconnected from old friends. We used to connect on a more surface level, and my taste for that has all but vanished.

The friends I do have, I rarely see due to our crammed schedules and family lives. However, the connection is so deep due to honesty and open sharing of our spiritual work that I do not feel distant from them at all.

Can you discuss your spiritual struggles with the people in your life, or is it saved for the Shroomery?

Have you managed to stay connected to old friends, and interact with them in other ways?

Do you have friends who inspired you or whom you inspired to delve into spirituality?

My closest friends are not at the Shroomery. But here in my life now. I have let go of the rest without hardly a thought.

I definitely feel the same way during my 'up-strokes' in spiritual activity. However, those up-strokes alternate with down-strokes, and during those I tend to enjoy myself more in the escapist ways towards which these friends tend to gravitate.

So, I guess you could say, since I am still transitioning towards being spiritually active on a regular basis, I can still connect with 'both sides of the fence' if I'm in the appropriate 'mode' at the time.

Can you discuss your spiritual struggles...

Struggling is not a spiritual vantage point, but you already know that...

There are a couple friends of mine who understand some of the same concepts as I, but on the whole there's not many intelligent people that I notice. Most people are too caught up in their own animalistic worries to appreciate animalistic philosophy.

Not to long ago back, I was flying so high, I think my old friends just thought I went koo koo. They couldn;t relate to me anymore and I couldn;t relate to them.

I still have them around and have learned to come back to their reference points to chat with them and they are relieved I think, yet, now the chit chat is just that to me. Like blah blah blah. I pretend to relate to them through the memory of what it was like to have problems.

I like the diversity of knowing people I can blow out of this universe with and people I can get low to the ground with. I shift around now depending on what i am looking for and now, can more easily run my energy up and down in a snap, maybe 3 snaps, to resonate with who I am with if I want.

Sometimes, I don't care to resonate with negative people when they are just bitching not looking for solutions or understanding and so I just smile and comment on the pretty trees until they figure out I'm not listening.

There were times I just hung out with only spiritual types and noticed I would loose traction not having something on the ground and that makes moving in 3-D tough.

I like having a diversity of people in my life. If you stick within one group or type, it's easy to get shaped and molded to fit their expectations of you.

If you swing around, you keep your own diversity within alive and I find that to me to be one of my greatest strengths to draw from.

I have only the my Lady to relate to on deep matters, for which I am supremely grateful. Otherwise there is no one at all. I have no family of my own, one estranged brother and his family in NJ who are mundane materialists living in a culturally Jewish mode, and only two childhood friends whom I only get to see every few years. One is a born Catholic living with his Cambodian Buddhist wife and family, the other is a Greek Orthodox living out of his mind-set with his equally Greek Orthodox wife in rural New Hampshire.

The only people that I have had deep talks with in many years are the two Shroomerites who have spent time with us: Enter and Flyguy (who doesn't post here any longer). This has been a problem for me my entire life, because as a kid I was into science (scientia=knowledge) not into sports, or games or later, social games. Then, as I discovered psychedelics, the serious individual that I am outpaced the casual tripper in the implications of Mind, pursuing academics that were related to my Psychedelic Experiences. Everyone else seemed to just 'grow up,' get married, have children, look for higher paying jobs, blah, blah, blah, death-by-boredom or brain-death by being boring, so I have long felt like Bill Murray in his role in 'The Razor's Edge,' standing on a pristine, crystalline white mountain peak in the Himalayas. I have skipped the 'Belongingness' Needs on Maslow's hierarchy of needs, and a certain social deficiency has always been a thorn in my side. However, that isolation is still better than a lifetime of sports talk. (My apologies to sports fans - no apologies to sports fanatics).

The Razor's Edge was an amazing film. It's funny that I was thinking about this movie for a long time now, but forgot it's title since I watched it many many moons ago, so thanks for bringing this up. I'll rent it again in the near future.

I agree it's hard to find similar minded friends and companionship for us "shroom people", since our feelings and view on the world are so different than the view the majority of society shares, and we are therefore too often drawn back to isolation, meditation and contemplation on life.

For a while I thought joining a similar minded intentional community would do the trick, but wouldn't that be just another form of escapism? Or not? Maybe we should move to Tibet or something? Go to the Burning man more often? Join a monastery and miss all the action in the "real world"? Dial Stanislav Grof or the people at MAPS and ask them to help us start a PA (Psychedelics Anonymous)?  :crazy2:

The book is excellent. IMO

More in-depth.

But I did love to movie also. It's what lead me to the book.

I think that it's probably been an inspiration to more than one person here.

It was to me, I completely related to how he felt.
