It seems to have been a common thing in the old days (before modern world). For example, look at how Jews kept order in their society before and at the time of christ, it was very strict, punishments were brutal, there was no place for rethinking any of the ways. Everything had its place and time, there was little freedom.

I wonder, if back then all of them had the freedom we have now (we chose our wives, we chose our ways etc.) would the humanity have survived at all?

We often look down on previous moralities and ways of life, but perhapse those ways evolve as people evolve, and today's systems would be unfiting for people of yesterday.
Maybe all of them we potential killers and rapists, so they had to hide their wives in order to prevent uncontroled rapes etc.

I read somewhere that as humans evolved their emotions and instincts got weaker, so now we can control some things that we couldn't in the past. Perhapse there was no other way but to be brutal toward violent and lusty humans cause they were as stupid and uncontroled like dogs.

what do you think?

I descend upon your earth from the skies
I command your very souls you unbelievers
Bring before me what is mine
