You can use straight vermiculite, a lot of people use only that, works fine.

You could also ask around at gardening centers, tell them you need something that will keep your soil very moist for a while (vermiculite). The coco coir is found as reptile bedding. Hope that helps

seed starting mix (jiffy mix) will work fine as a casing layer.

Vermiculite is a casing material. Alot of people use vermiculite and peat along with a pH buffer= 50/50+. Vermiculite can be used by itself with success. Vermiculite will not effect potency being that it is inert and has no nutritional value. Read HERE to see what the purpose of casing material is for.

is there any hydroponic stores around they sell coco coir.. you can use just soil but make sure there is no added nutes to it.. no N/P/K or it will burn the mycilum. and the casing layer has nothing to do with potency, the casing layer should contain no nutrient material, its only use is to keep the mycilum from drying out during fruiting. well theres my hope it helps ya out some, l8r
