 can anyone tell me what is going on with my casing ? (pic included)

This casing has been in my greenhouse since Friday the 2nd... my temp is 74 degrees and humidity the gauge says 90-92%... i just have a cool mist hooked up thats all... Just need some help to determine which road to follow to make this a success... just never seen this on this forum in any pics.. have read on this but no one gives much detail...

wow! good question, i haven't seen anything like it either, i'd like to know too! have you swabbed it with a Q-Tip to see if its contaminated?

I answered this question last night, your humidity is to high thats what causes those crazy rhizo's to grow. Try adding a thin casing layer adjust your rh to 85-90%, 90% tops casings dont need as much humidity as cakes. Try lowering your temp a few degrees also.

hehe you got the rhizo forest...hehe i love seeing that...neat looking isn't it. Almost like little frozen trees.
It isn't anything you need to be overly worried about. It is caused sometimes by RH being a bit too high, but IMO you can never have "too much" RH. Sometimes it is caused just by really agressive rhizomorphic growth.
If you do a light misting, that should knock them down a bit. Other than that, I don't think you need to add more casing material. I would just let the grow do it's thing. Rhizo's are a good thing. They should start knotting soon and then mushies.

finally answers .. and good ones to thanks for everyone that responded even if it was twice i really appreciate it .. the one thing though thats weird is my rh is at 90% but i am wondering could my gauge be off cause i bought it at petland its for lizards and seems very cheap for almost 5 dollars and the plastic cover already popped off once.. so if i leave the casing the way it is it should be fine then right? i just wanted to see if someone that has dealt with this before would give words of wisdom... thanks

there are too many variables to say when its going to pin, I grow strains with aggressive mycelium like that but I fruit them at 74 degrees and it halts the mycelium and sends it into pinning mode, what happens is that mycelium is still in colonizing mode but it ran out of places to go.

cause im at 74 now and i put the light on 12 on 12 off and have 90% humidity... what else should i do for pinning then?

Fresh air lots of it and to initiate pinning I use an 18/6 light schedule then once I see pins I go to the 12/12 then when pins are growing I use a 8/16 light schedule.
Is the temp 74 in the room or inside growing chamber? Poo generates heat and your substrate temp may be higher than 74.

hmm. good call .. i have my fish tank thermometer on the outside in the middle of the greenhouse... maybe i should put it inside the green house.. didnt think of that

Well, those $5 hygrometer/thermometers really suck. They are inaccurate almost 100% of the time. I have had one that read 90% RH in a room that actually only had 34%RH. hehe they are crap.
If you are looking for a middle of the road hygrometer/thermometer, you can go to walmart. you can pick up a digital accurite for like 13 bux that is fairly accurate. It will usually stop reading at 85-90%rh and just say "HI" on the screen. That is the one I use and it works fine for my needs.
If you are looking for something more upscale, you could look into the ones that go for 30-40 dollars. I know hippiechick had a really nice one that was wireless, you could PM her to find out the model. I don't remember what brand it was off hand.

get a digital hygrometer. i had a $5 guage by Four Paws that i got at a petshop too, and i was trippin cuz i couldnt get my RH up above 85% no matter what the fuck i did. i bought a digi and it showed my RH at 99%...so your humidity might be alot higher than u think.

god you guys are awesome... here i thought this was gonna be my third failure... but it seems some instruments i have are not good enough.. im gonna go today to walmart and find a hygrometer/thermometer... i think you guys are right either its way to high and my temps are probably way off... wow i cannot believe i missed all that.. i need a beer now...

another q i have is about the casing drying out... will my cool mist dry the casing out? i was thinking if i keep my aquarium pump in the resivoir of the cool mist and put it on say 70-75 degrees it would make the water more warmer in turn would put more water in the air and maybe would keep the casing from drying out or even nice and damp? or will it be no matter what i do i will have to mist?

FYI, you can pickup good hydrometers at cigar stores. I've had good luck with the mid level analog ones, they are pretty cheap ~ $5 - $10.
