Noob to poo needs help
    #4629140 - 09/07/05 08:54 AM (18 years, 6 months ago)

ive been working with grain for a while now, but i happened upon some organic 80% cow manure/20% worm castings mixture. i took some of this, mixed 20% of its mass in old straw, and baked at 175 for 3 hours, let cool, mixed with some grain spawn (1/4), then cased with a standard peat/verm casing.

with my experience with grain, it takes 10 days from casing to get pins, and 2 days thereafter to obtain mature fruitbodies. This manure took 10 days as usuall to obtain pins, but then has taken 4-5 days to obtain mature fruitbodies. The fruitbodies themselves are thin, the stems being only 1/2-3/4" in diameter, and rather hollow. In other words, ive obtained much bigger and thicker shrooms off of grains.

so what is the deal here, i thought manure was supposed to yeild thicker, bigger, and more potent mushrooms? what did i do wrong?

It depends on the depth and size of casing, also you sterilized the poo this is not recommended because it kills beneficial contaminates found in poo heres some links to poo teks

the bagged mix might not have been actually 80% manure... next time you might wanna pasturize it in a pot in water instead of in the oven... it might have been 175 in the oven, but the center of the poo was no doubtedly much hotter

what sized tray where you using? How deep was substrate and how deep was casing layer? If you must use a bagged mix most home depots and lowes sell this
http://www.blackkow.com/html/bkcompcowman.html
That website will even tell you if its sold in your area just remember Black kow its in a yellow bag with a black kow on front, this is not as good as h poo but it works.

the substrate depth was about 2.5", casing layer was 1". the container itself is rather small, for test purposes, about 1'X 1/2'X 1/2'.

so you are suggesting that i killed all the beneficial bacteria by accident and thats whats causing crappy shrooms? 175 was the lowest setting on my oven... how hot should the water be when i boil it? what if i left it outside all day under the hot florida sun? would that be sufficient? how hot should the center of the poo be?

i thought home depot and lowes mix contained fungicides and wasnt very good? i stuff i got is locally made, and completely organic.

so baking it at 175 in the oven for a couple hours is fine? you know, now that i think about it, im pretty sure the manure wasnt aged at all, so their was a good chance that ammonia was still present in it. what effect would ammonia have on shrooms? wouldnt it prevent it from growing all together if this was a problem?

No you would have had some deformed shrooms if any grew at all
Damn I cant find my pic of a shroom grown on poo with too much amonia Ill try to find it and post it for you.
You need to get a meat thermometer so you can manage the temp in the middle of casing, oven pasturizing also dries poo out, water methods are much better.

the problem with cow manure is that the cow has 4 stomachs...
so its broken down way more...and its soupy looking.
you usually have to add straw to the cow manure to get the right texture and thicken it up.

aged horse poo is less work.
It isn't broken down as much...and you don't have to add straw.
just pastuerize it and your good to go.

I hate working with wheat straw!~
I have better things to do than mess with it!~
too much work!~

thanks for the response roadkill, but i was referring to how big and dense the mushrooms get, and how potent they are. could you tell me your experience with cow poo compared to hpoo reguarding this? Would you consider cow poo to be better than grains?

also, how many strong flushes does a large manure layer of 6" put out?
