Fifty-five ecstasy tablets earns $350 fine 02 September 2005
An Auckland businessman caught up in the white collar drug ring which also nabbed television celebrity and former All Black Marc Ellis has been fined on a drugs charge.
Elliot John Worrall, 30, admitted a charge of possessing the class B drug ecstasy after police raided several addresses in Auckland in July.
He was fined $350 in Auckland District Court today and ordered to pay court costs by Judge Avinash Deovhakta, who said the fine had to be higher than others facing similar charges because he was found with 55 tablets.
Worrall's lawyer, Stewart Grieve, told the court he would not pursue an application for a discharge without conviction.
He was charged after six people were initially arrested in what police called a white collar drug dealing ring.
Court documents named Marc Ellis, who has since admitted a possession charge, and former Kiwi league star Brent Todd.
Ellis admitted possessing ecstasy and was fined $300 last week.
Todd has yet to be charged but police said he would face charges when he returned to New Zealand. He is living in Australia.
Nine people have been charged after the raids.
Several have admitted their roles but the man alleged to be the ringleader, a 55-year-old company director, has denied 22 charges he faces.
Another high-profile person, Auckland multi-millionaire property developer David Henderson, last month admitted trying to buy cocaine and received a suspended sentence after telling the court he would give $10,000 to a drug treatment centre.
Henderson, 51, was listed in the latest New Zealand Business Review Rich List as being worth $30 million.
Others caught up in the drug raids were due to appear in court again next month.

correct me if i am wrong but isn't that damn reasonable? in the US if you had 55 doses of ecstasy i think you would get banged harder then a $350 fine.
maybe thats the point of the posting? that the white collars never get it as hard? the article makes it seem like the fine was excessive. at any rate ill take up residence in New Zealand any day.

For real. The fine was less than what the drugs were worth.

Ummmm.... think the point of the post was to show what little punishment he got. X is a schedule 1 in the US. Most states consider possession of any scheduled drug other than weed to be a felony. Usually the states set 10 pills as bulk, so 5x bulk will be a 4th degree felony (for those that have 1-5). 6-18 months in jail. Of course you can plead out and take probation for something like that with no other charges.

I know. That's why I was surprised that his fine was so low.
