This ones has me beat, need help to identify

Solitary mushroom found in sheep grazing pasture. 14 cm tall dark brown cap 5cm diameter. Dry leathery feel, could be due to sun drying. Gills white, attached, adnate Spores white Stem thick and fleshy, bulbous at the bottom, narrowing at top. Smell, mild mushroomy.
I've checked my guides, but I can't find anything similar with white spores. Any idea what it is?

In appearance it looks like Pluteus cervinus. Did you guess the spore color based on the gill color? Try making a spore print on white paper overnight. If it's Pluteus, then the spore print will come out pinkish. The second photo seems to show a pinkish tinge to the gills.

I took a spore print on white paper before posting, the spores are so white that I have to hold the paper at an angle to see them. I took a second print on black paper to make sure and they are white.

I've had enough look at it, I cut the cap in half after I took a print to check the gills, I should have photographed then as it has dried and shrivelled now. The gill are fully attached to the stem and have dried to a pale creamy brown. Thanks for you help.

Was there any wood around? Partially burried logs or anything?
It does resemble Pluteus cervinus but the only specimens I've found have been on tree stumps and logs.

At first I thought it was Volvariella Speciosa but I agree, it does look a lot like Pluteus cervinus, but the thing that puts me off both is not the lack of wood, it could well be an old stump, or even the white spores, I don't know how pink they should look, looks pure white to me but the gills are not at all free. They are attached to the stem by their full width, adnate is the term my guide uses. I did check the cross section of the cap before posting.
I never realised how bleeding difficult identification could be. I think would have to invest in a decent microscope if I'm ever going to take my new found hobby seriously! oh and macro lens I've had my eye on.

The attached gills, spore print color, habitat, and lack of volva rule out pluteus and volvariella for me.. The species does look familiar to me, it's frustrating me because I thought I used to know the name and now I can't even come up with a genus by using my keys.. it branches out to collybia or one of the many satellite genera that branched out from that genus, (keys are outdated and taxonomy has changed) from that point, deep within the keys it just gets plain messy. grrrrrr....... damnit...

I think eris is in the right direction. A definitely white spore print completely rules out Pluteus and Volvariella. The base of the stem looks like it was broken off, which suggests Xerula, a genus that (as eris mentions) was branched off from Collybia.

Melanoleuca is a reasonable guess for genus, although I don't think it's that species. The stem description doesn't agree - it should mention the prominent dark scales seen in your photos. If I were to go with a Melanoleuca I would probably lean towards M. melaleuca.
Based on the appearance of the stem I am primarily leaning toward Xerula furfuracea, which has the scales on the stem as in your photos.

Thanks for your help ToxicMan, I think you are spot on with Xerula furfuracea. I have learned a lot from trying to identify this mushroom, mainly how little I know! Seriously though, you've been a big help - cheers.
