pnw hunting

I live in northern California, and I'm new to hunting. I'm interested in huntng active mushrooms, and I'm wondering if they will be more abundant the farther north I travel?

if you're new to hunting, I suggest actually finding mushrooms first, and then worry about where the motherload is when you're more comfortable/experienced.  It would be a bummer to travel and not find anything.  Especially with the gas prices soaring.

edit-
look what the cat dragged in...

California (San Francisco to Oregon)
Psilocybe cyanescens
Psilocybe pelliculosa
Psilocybe semilanceata Kummer.
Psilocybe stuntzii
Gymnopilus aeruginosus
Gymnopilus luteofolius

I apreciate the advice but by abundant i didnt mean finding mass quataties, though it would be nice. I meant would i have a higher proablility of finding active mushrooms the farther north i traveled. And yes i have read through this site and have found there are more active species in oregon and wash. Im looking for peoples opinions not quotes from the site.

First off you really only need to worry about three of those.

P. cyanescens
P. stuntzii
P. semilanceata

www.google.com (your best friend). I suggest you do some research because the season is just around the corner. And yes, Oregon would be your best bet, for all three.

As far as semis and stuntziis go, they are pretty hard to find in Cali. Cyans can be found with enough looking in NorCal though.

If you decide to travel through Oregon, make sure it's early-mid november, and you stay within or west of the Williamette Valley.

Anyways, do some research man, alot of it.

I'm not from the are but wouldn't Psilocybe azurescens and Psilocybe cyanafibrillosa be in that list too?

I don't think Ps. azurescens have ever been reported south of Oregon, correct me if I'm wrong...

and I am not sure about Ps. cyanofibrillosa's....

DLittle- research is what makes the hobby great!  It is a hobby for a true explorer   There are plenty of posts about hunting in this region of the country that are chock full of people's opinions.  It can only be given so many times   So check out the search function and absorb!  Welcome to the Shroomery

ps.cyanofibrillosa and ps.cyanescens, along with ps.stuntzii, can be found in the norther california area . In my time hunting i've only found one stand still liberty cap - i wouldnt even bother searching for them in cali. look in woodchip piles between october-january for the other three listed above.
