Drying part 2
    #4624288 - 09/06/05 01:09 AM (18 years, 6 months ago)

Okay after about a full day they're pretty dry, but still not "cracker crisp", they're pretty flexible. I set my oven to warm, put them on a baking sheet, cracked the oven door, and set the timer to 10 minutes. Will this be sufficient without any loss of potency?

Ok I pulled them out a couple minutes early...not much flexibility, cracker crisp

It was only for 5 minutes and the temp couldn't have been above 160.

Don't dry them in the oven, or using any heat above 100 degrees, generally. Using just fans, it can take a few days to completely dry, you must be patient with this method.

If you don't want to wait, a dehydrator is the way to go. The american harvest snackmaster works great for me.

So are they useless now or is this just a heads up for next time?

No they probably aren't useless, and some people will say that you don't get potency loss if you keep it around 150, but I still wouldn't use that method because I don't want to compromise potency.

Fair enough. What's a decent dehydrator run for...$50-$60?

I got mine on ebay for somewhere around $25 including shipping. Just be sure to get one with a temperature control so you can set it to the lowest temp, on mine it's 95. I highly recommend the above mentioned model, as will many others on this board.

Nice.  Thanks for the advice.  I can't help looking at my bag of dried mushrooms and going, "Damn...I grew that."  They look so much more appetizing

Once again i think people want to dry too fast. Relax you've come this far and I'm sure it took alto of patients .... a little more wont hurt.
I'm a firm believer in a double dry tec. 12-24 hrs under a fan.... then another 12-24 hr in a desiccant chamber.
My DC is just a large folgers coffee can( plastic type) small dry rid can on bottom, screen in the middle with a small cpu fan in the center pulling the air on top with the shrooms, don to the desiccant.
