improv. cold shock
    #4621756 - 09/05/05 06:29 AM (11 years, 5 months ago)

i'm about to dunk/cold shock my cakes in plastic containers, organized by strain. i don't have room in my refrigerator and am not willing to just throw food out, so there in lies my problem. i want to cold shock them to induce pinning and was wondering about any methods used/known. i was thinking about using a smaller plastic container filled with ice to hold down the cakes underwater and provide some sort of chilling factor. would ice be too cold? they(the cakes) wouldn't be in direct contact with the ice. but ice melts fast in room temperature water and i don't think i'll have enough time to keep loadin that bitch up with ice. any help/advice on this subject would be appreciated. -thanx :crazy2: :mushroom2: :crazy2:

cold shocking is not necessary, it will stall the myc and delay pinning. cold shocking is more valuable when growing edibles than cubes. so just do your dunk and forget the cold shock. do roll them though that will help out.

Agreed. There is no reason to cold shock a species that grows in Texas and Florida in the summertime. The reason for dunking in the refrigerator is to prevent bacteria growth while the substrate is submerged in water. If you have no room in the refrigerator, simply rinse the cakes very well under running water both before and after the dunk.

one idea:

Get a cooler and fill it 1/3 of the way or more with ice. Open the spikut (nozzle thingy to let water out) and put your plastic container resting on top of the ice. Your plastic container will do the dunking and the ice cooler will keep things cooler than outside and provide a sterile enviornment yet not FREEZE them. Sound like what you wanted?
