hawk sub - Too sticky?
    #462138 - 11/18/01 10:32 AM (22 years, 4 months ago)

Friends wombat just PC'd some hawk substrate. It came out in a clump which he wonders if that is supposed to be. Thought that the instructions might have indicated that the sub should be shakeable. Should it be a clump or shakeable so that the seed is essentially loose. Thanks in advacne.

this appears not to belong in adv. cult.

you do not want clumps, you probably added too much water or did not mix thuroughly.

the wombat comined the micron birdseed and the hawk formula. So he has quart jars with hawk substrate. Trying to mesh the recipies. The jars only have two cups as per the micron tek. Will having that much air in there flub the whole deal?

cross posting is a big no no, please do not do it again.

what exact recipie did you use? how did you prepare your grain (birdseed)? what did you add? in what order?

I used the hawk recipie with the flax, brf, verm, and birdseed. I boiled the birdseed micron style and then simmered it for an hour. I strained it and added the flax, brf, and verm and mixed well. Added 2 cups per each quart jar and pd'd for an hour at 15 psi.

There were very small (1/2 size of a marble) clumps before I put them in the jars. The clumps now are just the cake itself so it's kinda big. It dosen't look like there is not enough rooom for the myc to grow. I just wondered cause in the hawk tek page for this he says don't use too much water otherwise the flax would turn into a syrup and it would make things too sticky. So i went with what I thought was too little water and still I think it's ok I am just hoping there is someone out there who has tried to adapt the tek for quart jars micron style which is just plain old birdseed with nothing added.

what do you mean micron style? micron is a measurement of length.. do you mean micron magic or however he spells it?
hawk's formula is independant of container.. if you have pronounced balls or clumps, it sounds like you merely had too much water and did not mix properly..
