Using Soil as a casing layer?
    #4621019 - 09/05/05 12:24 AM (11 years, 3 months ago)

Is it possible to just use potting soil as a casing layer, rather than peat/Coir/coco, etc? What do you all think?

The job of the casing layer is to retain lots of water and provide a strong foundation for the mycelium to grow through and fruit mushrooms. I don't think soil would be up to the task.

if you think about it, mushrooms naturally come out of the ground. For that reason, soil would work. I dont know where you're getting your information.

Now, as for being the most optimal choice for a casing layer? I think there are better ones.

Actually, it does work. There is a log here somewhere. Someone used this stuff called "BLACK KOW" I think. Its a mix of poo and soil. Look for posts with KOW in them.

Ah, well I should have said I'm no expert. I'm sure it would work, but like its been said, its definitely not the best substrate to use.

Just a quick reminder, a casing layer is not a substrate, it is a casing layer.

Works fine just sterilize it. I like to ad the moisture like with coir and then pc in jars let cool and just use right out of the jar.

i set up two casings in flower pots using a crumbled birdseed jar and then covered it in soil and put grass seeds on the surface. turns out that my shit dog tore the fuck out of them so i scooped them back in as much as i could, didnt resterilize or anything, gave it a little TLC and let it listen to some marley and now they have taken off and the whole flower pot is like a colonized cake with little grass shoots coming out....it looks kinda funny but it works great.

foaf has used regular old potting soil and verm mixed 50/50,sterilized in oven at 300 degree f.for 30 min and added sterilized spring water to field capacity, meaning when sqeezed in your hand only a drop or to of water should trickle out, about 60 percent moisture content.

Soil should work just fine you might want a soil/clay mixture to help hold water. But in all honesty peat verm and calcium is the way to go.
