Verm as bottom layer for poo casings...
    #4620964 - 09/05/05 12:04 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

What is the word on a small layer of dry verm in the bottom of a container to soak up excess water in a poo casings?

Wouldn't dry verm harbor a certain level of contaminants? Granted poo is pretty resistant - is it wise to throw them in there? Say the bottom of the layer of verm gets wet. With the heat from the poo and the moisture, wouldn't that promote a possible incubation of sorts for whatever might lurk?

Is this a good or bad idea?

If your going to use verm as a bottom safety layer, use moist verm.
Dry verm will suck the moisture out of your substrate and throw off the balance.
Moist verm will still hold any excess moisture and release it back into the substrate as needed.
When you wet the verm, use a 10:1 solution of distilled water:3% H2O2.
You only need about a half inch layer on the bottom.

I presume using the H2o2 will negate the need to PC the verm?

Also, when you say moist, I am guessing that you are talking roughly %80 field capacity? Although 80% would be ridicules to try and estimate, it sounds like a good target...

I feel that 1/2" of dry verm is just right. A layer of dry verm seems to soak up just enough moisture as to prevent the poo from stalling in a bottom pool of moisture that is typical of a bulk run.

Even at 1/2" of dry verm, the layer I used was totally soaked and there was plenty of moisture after the poo had flushed several times. To each his own, but I feel that putting wet verm down there is just asking for moisture/stalling issues.

In the event that I choose to use dry verm, are there any sterile precautions that you might recommend? As with my original post, should I try and take measures to sterilize the dry verm - or is it okay straight from the bag?

That's up to you, but personally, I wouldn't sterilize straight verm.

Holydiver, I just read your post

And it sounds like it is all about how wet your substrate is. In that case, I suppose I could just take precautions to effectively drain my poo. On that note,

How resistant is poo after pasteurization to contaminates? In a specific example, I use cheesecloth (soon I will use nylon mesh) to strain/drain. Would it be a bad idea to let my poo drain in a cheesecloth sack that is just sitting outside?

If your substrate is excessivly wet, then the dry verm would be ok.
If your substrate is at a correct moisture content, the moist (not wet) verm is just an added precaution, and source of moisture through the fruiting stages.
And the H2O2 in the mix water is more than enough to take care of any stray nasties.
No need to sterilize the verm.

Have fun!!!

I use 1/2 in or more of verm on bottom, I dont dunk casings between flushes, I sterilize syringes of water and inject the verm layer on bottom and heavy mist the top and add a thin moist casing layer.
This works great for me, but this is something you need to find your own style of doing this.
