Disappointing? No way! Those mushrooms from your casings are picture perfect. You may have gotten fewer in number, but i bet they make up for it in weight. Great thread Banaman. Five shrooms for you.

10/10/05 Harvested trays 2/3/4 = 147g wet/140g wet/146g wet.
10/11/05 Harvested tray 5 = 187g wet.
NOTE: trays 3 & 4 have been birthed due to invitro growing. They were placed on foil with a bed of wet verm underneath. Then the sides were misted and sprinkled with verm and misted again. The top casing was misted and it was placed back in the FC.
Total first flush weight harvested off only 5 trays and four cakes, 993g wet!! (tray 6 is still fruiting. i will harvest tonight or tomorrow morning)
Tray 2
Tray 3
Tray 4
Tray 5
_________ _________
The original three cakes getting ready for their second flush. These pins are fewer but much fatter.
EDIT: Those small plates, (covered w/foil in the pic below), proved to be too big. I originally took them out of their jar lids/rings because some of the shrooms growing from the base of the cake were getting smashed between the jar ring and the cake itself.
These plates covered with foil provided too much upward light reflection and confused the shrooms on which direction to grow. After witnessing this during the second flush, I placed them on, (not in!), plastic mayonaise jar lids covered with foil.

Pinsets come with practice. Definatly needs to have more mycelium colonizing the surface of the casing layer. I would use some chunky verm instead of the fine stuff..or as ghetto chunky verm, use 50/50 fine verm and perlite in the casing layer (so 25/25/50 verm/perlite/peat). Chunky verm still works better. Maybe even towards the 40% end with the peat (little more verm and perlite). The fluffiness will help the mycelium rip through the casing layer. Adding 10-15% coir helps too, but is less important. Then once you are getting good growth, its all about timing on when you expose it to light. Pretty much, if conditions are good, the first mycelium showing will pin first so you want everywhere to be showing if you want everywhere to pin, but showing just enough for your pins.
Also I would line the inside of your containers with tin foil, it helps make it extra light proof and the foil bonds with the substrate and shrinks with it, and doesnt let any air get down there either...helps a whole lot in getting rid of that side pinning. Also make sure when dumping the substrate and casing layer, you dont dump in the middle and spread it as this can compact the middle and make pins show up on the outside first. Alot of times mycelium comes up quicker on the outside anyway because the water dripping from the sides of the containers makes it wetter, so try to keep the edges only as moist as the middle, again the tin foil helps here (and patch edges more if they show through more at first). Keep up the good work.

Also, trying different strains will give you better pinsets, some are just more difficult to handle then others sometimes, I had trouble getting GT's to give me a good pinset, personally..always pinned on the side too, very quickly and almost to aggressivly. I always suggest trying out 3 or so different strains and sticking with the one that works best for you and working on that one, just because genetics do vary from strain to strain.

10/11/05 Harvested tray 6 of the first flush. 169g wet
So, that?s the entire first flush?. the final total of all 4 cakes and all 6 trays of h/poo is; 1,162g wet.
Tray 6
Placed back in the fruiting chamber. Notice the verm on the sides of the cake.

Well, folks it's been a blast. I enjoyed the experience and have appreciated all the help. I have enjoyed making the grow diary and I'm glad some of ya'll have enjoyed reading it.
My first flush is over and posting this log and mycoporn does take up quite a bit of my time. So, I will be retiring from my updates.
Love ya', mean it.
