Maroon Bells
    #4620654 - 09/04/05 10:26 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

This is my story about climbing the 14,156 feet Maroon Peak in the Elk Mountain Range. After last months failed attempt, i was determened to make it to the summit this time. Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak together are known as the Maroon Bells. The Maroon Bells beauty is world renowned, being some of the most photographed mountains in the world!

In the photo above.... Maroon Peak is the peak in the foreground and the north peak is in the front. To climb Maroon Peak we(my brother and a few phriends) picked the easiest route, the South Ridge II. This route is an easy class 3 trail. The 10+ mile route is long, ardous ascent on very dangerously loose rock. We started our aventure with a 3.3 mile hike with fully loaded packs and set up base camp at Crater Lake which is close to the South Ridge II climbers trail.

My heavy ass pack.....

Me and the very rocky trail to Crater Lake.....

Some wildlife we walked up on.....

And the Bells still very far away....

After the 3 mile hike to base camp i set up my tent and fell out quick with plans to awake at 4am to make our summit attement.

me tent....

me bear bag....

After i awoke to complete darkness we ate some oat meal and set out for a long hike in the dark. We climbed in the dark up the mile long streach of broken class 3 ledges to reach the maroons south ridge at 13,300 feet. By the time we reached the ridge the sun had come up and was shining full blast, it felt really good when the sun came out cauze it was about 40 degrees untill then. This was a very difficult 2800 foot asent that truly tests your training program.

the view from the south ridge...

Now was for the tricky part, we followed the well cairned route that followed the montains west ridge at 13,000 feet for a .25 mile of frustating, up and down traverses to saddle between the Maroon Peak and Point 13,753.

the crazy sidewalk.....

some tricky route finding....

When we reached the gully that lead to the saddle between the peaks, it was full of very dangerously loose scree. We climbed very carefully up the gully trying not to kick rocks on eachother(helments) up to 13,753 feet. Now i was only 400 feet from the summit, and i was feeling no pain form the 8 hour ascent up to this point. There was nothing stoping me from here! I zig-zaged up the face following the least resistance and was soon on top of the world!!

Once on the summit, i enjoyed my moment in time and celebrated with my phriends with slappin high fives and hugs.

hahaha...  i'm first

time to relax and eat a power bar....

The veiw was truly amazing.....

So now came the koolest part, my phriends and i are enjoying our solitude and we get an unexpected vist from some Mountain Goats? at 14,156 feet.

Yummy.....

And one last look, now it was time to get off the summit before the afternoon thunder storms arived. It only took 6 hour to decent for a total of 10 miles in 14 hours. This was by far the hardest mountian i climbed.
