Mushrooms are not photosynthetic so they do not require light. However, according to Agar, some light also gives them thicker stems.

Give them 12/12 as they grow the most in darkness. The 12 hours of light will give you good pin formation, a direction to grow towards, and some beefier fruits. 24/7 light may hurt the grow in the longrun.

In all truth there is no SET way of doing things here because of personal experience, sociological, political, and legal boundaries...

A lot of people come here for advice and the ones that are the most successful are the ones that read the most, and then adapt.

Every grow is unique... along with the journeys that follow :mushroom2:

All I am saying here and now is that introducing 24/7 light to MY grow made it go from laggin to AWESOME in under 2 days....

I kinda agree. I didn't go to 24/7 but stayed at12/12 and increades the wattage of my lghting. went from a 20 watt clear bulb to a 60 watt and what a difference it made on my pinnset but i had to go back to the 20 watt, whitch is ok because i got a great pinn set started, the 60 watt was raising my temp too much.

In the dark my FC is @ 70-71, with the 20 watt my temp gets up to 73 by the end of the 12 hr, and with the 60 watt the temp went up to 79. I prefer my temps in the low 70's.

I just use indirect sunlight to iniate pinning and thats the best natural way anyway
Good quality light does make a differance

Studies have shown mushrooms grow the most during the dark cycle. I my book this is an important clue.

I use a 16 on 8 off schedule and it works great, However I tell all people on here who ask questions about light, lighting is the least important thing, and I know shrooms can change a lot in 48 hours maybe it wasnt the light but the time period you decided to make the change, do it a couple more times and take pics then post your finding people on here like proof.

I believe it was Roger Rabbit posted a controlled study done with pics that I found excellent.

Indeed, they just take off in darkness.   I use an absolute minimum of light once pins have formed, just enough to signal direction and that's it.  A few hours under the fluorescent, or in the corner of your room where they can get some indirect light from a window is just right.

If using casing why don't you wait till your casing is totally finished colonizing then switch lighting to 12/12 and leave it like that. This should also work with cakes. After all, when shrooms grow in the wild they are subjected to 12/12 cycle of light aren't they?

Please correct me if I'm wrong I do not want to circulate incorrect information.

Gotcha, I read that post after I posted my response :-) So, when you say "minimum of light" use approximately 1 hour of lighting every day if that?

you could probably get away with even less.  mushies need extremely low amount of light.  They do most of their growing in the dark.

They can also be grown with no light at all, but fruit size and color will be affected.

The light cycle is mainly used as a pinning trigger and mostly for fruit directioning.

I personally use a 12/12 because it is easier to set my timer for that, but you could use far less.

24/7 will not give you optimal results, IMO, because mushies do a good amount of their growth in the dark.  That would also mess with the temps in the terrarium as well as the RH level.  Bringing in too much dry heat.

so.... :nono: to the 24/7 cycle.

At risk of sounding like a broken record.
The little bit of light that comes in under the closet door is all my mushies need.

I've always went by the old adage If you can read by it it will do just fine. I to go with the 12/12 just because I like to mimic nature whenever possible.

Ok youu've all made me rethink my methods and yet again I'll try something new.
I have been 12/12 but i have finally gotten some great pin sets, so I'll try this. 2hrs in the am .....the lights almost like my alarm..... and then 2hrs in the evening..... about the time i get home.... like to have a few min with my babaies lol.
Sound good ?
