What The Funk? Any ideas?
    #4620026 - 09/04/05 05:46 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

So these are my jars(pf/rice/verm) some of which the substrate has turned black, i need help identifying it. Some of the cakes are well colonized, and i was thinking of just letting em' battle it out. If they get 100% colonized, can i break them open, case them and fruit them?

It looks like bacterial contamination. That's very common if you've incubated your jars above about 80F. On the next set of jars, I'd recommend just letting them sit on a shelf at room temperature.

did your brf happen to have any black spots in it before hand? a few of mine have a few specks, but i think it's just the verm that has moved...most of it's around the top anyways. Just curious.

brown rice flour. I'm guessing mine is just the darker particles of verm then. my apt. is around 78-80, the jars are sitting in a cleaned out sterlite. I don think contam yet for me.

They look contaminated not only with bacterial contamination but also with some sort of black contamination.
You can look in the faq, but without a microscope, it's hard to tell what's the kind of contaminant you're dealing with.
My advice would be to start all over. The are some nasty black contaminations, so this is usually a no go. You can keep the jars and sterilize them with a bleach bath, after carefully disposing the cakes. You should also clean all your equipment with a strong bleach solution.
Sorry man, have patience and better luck next time.
