Sterilizing PF Substrate jars in the oven?
    #4618891 - 09/04/05 11:03 AM (12 years, 24 days ago)

Is this possible instead of steaming? I don't have a pressure cooker, but I have 24 jars mixed up, and I'd like to do them all at once instead of 4 at a time (which would be the case with steaming). Is there any way to use an oven to do this, or am I stuck with steaming it?

Well i dont know if its possible to do it in the oven but i do know its no reccomended. Get a large pot, lay a cloth on the bottom (so as not to crack the jars from heat) put your jars in, fill w/ water half way up the jars boil at a low temp (i bring mine to boil at a high temp then when it starts to boil i lower temp.) Cover pot w/ lid and boil for 1 hr. Let cool to room temp then inoculate. Thats how i do it and it works fine.

Putting them in the oven will not sterilize them. What it will do though, is get really hot and dry and dry out your substrate rendering your jars useless.

Stick to steaming for now. Go to your local walmart and look at their clearance bins. I always see PC's in my local walmart in there. You can pick up a decent 8qt PC for 20 bux or less that way.
In an 8qt you should be able to do 8 1/2pt jars at once.

thanks. i figured it would dry them out but it would be much quicker than steaming all 24 jars so i figured i'd ask. I'll probably go check walmart for a cheap pressure cooker. appreciate the advice.
