Goethe's 'Faust' or Marlowe's 'Faust?'

Goethe. That was a work of fiction...correct?

Apparently there may be some historicity to a Dr. Faustus.
I remember performing a magick rite with my roommate in the basement of our college's Interfaith Chapel at midnight on Halloween 1972. I stood in my circle, my roommate stood in his circle, both surrounded by candles. A Triangle of the Art was drawn on the floor in chalk between us for the manifestation of Asmodeus, if it were to appear. Incense made with belladonna and morning glories smoked on charcoal while, with athames raised, I read from Waite's Book of Ceremonial Magic. Then, the door to our large basement room opened and in walked a lad - I thought: this is exactly how Mephistopheles appeared before Dr. Faut - not in a sulphurous plume, but walking in through the door.  It turned out to be a student caretaker, spooked by the sonorous Latin being intoned commandingly in the basement below.

Fortunately for us, that demon of OT notariety did not appear

Yeah, but the outcome is different. In the original story by Marlowe, he has to relinquish his soul in 24 years and ends by going to Hell. In Goethe's story, he renounces the devil at the last moment, dies, but is delivered from Hell.

"The real Faust
Doctor Johannes Faust lived at the beginning of the 16th century. He was a medical practitioner and had studied astrology and alchemy as well as philosophy. He must have travelled a lot as there were reports of him from all German regions. Rumours and legends about him began while he was still alive. It was said that he was calling up the dead and practicing black magic. The exact date and the circumstances of his dead are unknown, most likely he was murdered. With his dead (about 1540) the story set in that he had made a pact with the devil." http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/har/faust.htm

I have a copy of this 1616 woodcut hanging in my study - swiped from grad school where drama was putting on the play.
